View Full Version : For the RPGers out there

So, I've been participating in this online sim (http://www.usgovsim.net/USG/index.php) for a little while now, and have done other such sims in the past. I enjoy it because, if the sim is done right, it gives you a small sense of how to actually craft legislation, respond to outside events, etc.

It got me thinking, though. Why not have something like this for us? Why not have an online sim, using a forum structure like the aforementioned sim does, that models a general congress of workers' councils, beginning from pre-revolution and going through into the transition to communism?

Would people here be interested in doing an RPG like this? If so, I am more than willing to take a little of the holiday money I got and set it up. But I really don't want to do it unless there is significant interest.

I'm doing a lot of RP in Cybernations. Had several positions of government in various alliances, currently the Liaison Commissar ("Minister of Foreign Affairs") in The International (http://theinternational-cn.com/), the biggest commie alliance in that game at present time.

This would be another spin at it, sounds interesting, maybe I could recruit a few people from over CN to this :D

If we can get about 15 or more people interested in this, I'll set it up.

Meh, I would try it out, but Im not sure if i'll get bored very easily. I need some type of graphic interface to get into the whole RPG thing. Reading stats and all ain't my thing with gaming haha.

I was active on the Nations game on Facebook, in the biggest leftist alliance (did a stint as a legislator for them too), but I dropped out about a year & a half ago cos I felt it was more or less either I commit the time to keep up with stuff or drop out and I didn't have the time to commit cos of uni. I imagine this would be the same, unfortunately

What Political Chunky says above goes to an extent for me too, it helps to be able to see something. I used to do tabletop roleplaying, but the GMs who tended towards using a map with representation of the respective positions of players and NPCs moved on from the roleplaying group, and I found the lack of something like that made it a lot more difficult to concentrate on the game

Go ahead and sign up. Once we get a decent amount of members signed up (at least 15), I'll start adding the background and rules for gaming, and send out a notice to begin play.

For those wanting to play, go to the "Credentials Committee" forum, read the three pinned threads ("Creating a Biography", "Getting Started" and "The Story So Far..."), then post your bio in that forum.

On behalf of all the potential trans players, why do you have to put male or female?

Also, forgive my ignorance but what's an "Obamaville"?

So, when am I getting the validation email?

I haven't got my validation email yet either, but I can log on

Suggestion: a maximum number of posts per "day" of the Congress, so that we can maintain a link between the discussions and events happening outside?

If they are M-F then they are female and if they are F-M then they are male I see no problem.

I know trans people who don't identify as one gender or the other. Surely it's not a big deal to leave it open rather than have a binary? I suppose so long as it's not enforced if someone comes along and identifies as something other than male or female it's not much of an issue anyway

To clarify my suggestion regarding timelines, that's a maximum number of posts per "day" on the Congress Hall, in the Hopper and in each Congressional Committee, party office and press office. Separate limits, and no limits in the media, the Windy City subforum or the OOC subforums.

In the end, it's really not a big deal. The logic behind giving your character a stated gender is that the sim is run as if this is an in-person event, meaning that my character, for example, is going to see your character in the Hall, in Committee meetings, around the Hotel or the Windy City in general. Obviously, common gender-neutral terminology ("it") would be insulting, and third person plural ("they") has a feeling of impersonality. So, how would I refer to you using a personal pronoun in the third person singular (e.g., "he" or "she")? My character's first instinct would be to base it on outward appearance. But if there is an accepted term, I would certainly use that, and would add it to the Gender category.

Also, forgive my ignorance but what's an "Obamaville"?

If you read "The Story So Far...", the background story to how the Congress came about, it describes what an Obamaville is. They actually do exist in real life, and have since 2009. They are similar to the "Hoovervilles" that homeless and unemployed workers set up early in the Great Depression in the U.S. as a protest against then-President Hoover's actions in response to the economic crisis.

As we get started, we might need to not have a cap on the maximum number of posts, since there will be issues of setting up committees and participants getting their offices set up. For floor debate, most of them will have, on average, one week periods for debate, which means that participants won't need to post but once or twice a day in those areas. I think the Hopper, though, should be unlimited, since usually hundreds of bills and resolutions are submitted, but only a few will go to a committee or the Floor.

But, as the guidelines say, people should not sacrifice their lives for the sim. It's just a game. So, yeah, I'd recommend moderation, too.

Incidentally, all the documentation is up on the forum now. With the exception of some tweaking with the graphics and some setup that will be done over time, all we're lacking are participants. So, sign up if you haven't already; the sooner we reach a decent number of players, the sooner we can begin.

I think most trans people have an individually preferred pronoun. Don't quote me on that though

For floor debate, most of them will have, on average, one week periods for debate, which means that participants won't need to post but once or twice a day in those areasI meant game time "days", not realtime days :P To keep the link between events outside and the discussion inside. Now that I think of it though, I'm increasingly less sure about how necessary or workable it is, after all talking is a free action in tabletop roleplaying

btw, I've not got my validation email yet and it sounds like Q hasn't either? I also can't post, not sure whether that's to do with the validation emails or cos you're not enabling posting till we start?

Is Indymedia not included in "workers' media", or is it considered a collective?

Also, I think it's unrealistic that parties involved in the Congress wouldn't write about it in their papers. Unless thats a condition of party recognition, I guess?

Indymedia and other radical media sites (e.g., Left Turn, Anti-Capitalist Project) are considered collectives. Non-registered party press can either be in the general "Workers' Media" section or posted in individual participants' press offices.

Martin Blank

Yeah I mean, how come registered party press can't be included in "workers' media"?

It can, but registered party press will hold more weight in the Congress, in terms of influencing participants and legislation, than would "workers' media" that has no presence in the Congress. That's why there is the distinction. For the most part, all participants are going to pay attention to press releases, press conferences, registered party press, etc., but not all participants are going to listen to "workers' media" with no (virtual) physical presence in the Congress.
