I just read this article on the Italian neo-fascist group Casa Pound (http://www.metamute.org/content/casa_pound_and_the_new_radical_right_in_italy) and noticed in one of the pictures a bunch of nazis clutching these baton/stick things wrapped in the colors of the Italian flag. The article mentions them in reference to a specific incident, and indicates the fash make it a habit to bring them along to various events when there's the possibility of a fight. I've seen similar things in the hands of French rightist street thugs in pictures and videos of groups like Action Francaise. The batons all look pretty identical, whether in Italy or France. Does anyone know what they're made of? What's the history of them?

I can't be sure, but I'm guessing it's just a wooden stick with a flag wrapped around it, to make it less suspicious.

Kind of look like those wooden swords used for martial arts training.

wooden sticks, personalized, with no standard size or style. Which means they are prepared a head of time, but since the sticks look so different, the production of the baton is improvised.
