I was just curious as to how many people outside Australia have heard of it, and what those in Australia do know/think about it.

The Eureka Rebellion was an uprising by gold miners of all walks of life and from all ethnic backgrounds against the exorbitant 'miner's license' fees and dictatorial nature of the British colonial government in the state of Victoria. The miners barricaded themselves into a stockade on Bakery Hill, Ballarat, and made preparations to take up the fight to the colonial police force. The police and army stormed the stockade on December 3, killing 22 of the miner's. This has great significance in Australian history, as it is pretty much the only armed rebellion staged in our history, but more so, it represents the ideal of a multicultural and independent Australia, free from foreign imperial interference, be it British or American.

I've never heard of said Eureka Rebellion, and besides saying that your summary was intriguing, I can only assist you in letting you know that.:)
