View Full Version : Anarchism and the Police vis-a-vis possible Suicide

Just want to get anarchists opinions. I know anarchists generally think that police involvement is always avoidable. But recently (like about an hour ago) I thought a friend of mine might have hurt themselves or committed suicide or something. I don't think I was over reacting. They sent me some obscure text messages about how they were a)feeling like throwing up b) They were not happy and c) They said "sorry" but did not respond when I asked them to elaborate on what they were sorry about. Now I agree, we need to avoid the cops. But when I went over there, they weren't answering their door. So I called the police because I was afraid they might have hurt themselves (The individual has a history of mental instability and we've talked about suicide before, what would be the best way to do it etc.) Well, turns out they were sleeping, and now they're all fucking pissed off at me because I called the cops, and they're on probation or whatever. So I feel like a total ass and an accomplice to an oppressive institution (never mind that this person has absolutely no problems with another friend of ours who fucking married to a cop. So it's not a matter of principle so much as self preservation I guess).

Any advice?

Tell them to get over it, you were just trying to look out for them.

But was the police's purpose in this situation any different than what would have been that of a civil defense force or community organized watch?

Ah man, that was a total ass thing to do. If you think you lost your Anarchist cred joining a union, then this doubles that by miles!

Just kidding, not really. Like Il Medico said, just tell them to get over it and you're just trying to be a good friend.

Personally, I would have kicked their door in or gotten an air horn and a megaphone...

Example: Air horn + Megaphone = BIG LOUD NOISE THAT CAN SHATTER A WINDOW! :D

Cops escalate situations, when it comes to mental health issues, it's probably never a good idea to involve police (who are relatively likely to arrest the person going through the crisis, making matters far worse).
Apologize to your friend, and never do anything like that ever again. Seriously.

If you're worried about your friend, read up on how to support people with mental health issues, and work with them on finding out what they need from you. The Icarus Project is maybe a worthwhile resource to check out.

This makes sense to me. I wish they had a chapter in my area.
