While this is exemplary of para-fascist movements (and completely in line with the faux-'workingclass lads' attitude of the EDL, their opposition to the unions, etc.) I think it's got more to do with the EDL being pissed media attention has been diverged away from the EDL and their ever-shrinking numbers. After all, media attention is really all the EDL has: causing a ruckus, shouting 'pakis out' and singing 'Britannia rules the waves' on national television is the core of their political influence.
After all, the EDL's goals aren't revolutionary and haven't got anything to do with working-class politics. Sure, their member-base might be largely working-class but this goes just as much for Jihadist movements in the middle-east and many a fascist movement throughout history. Secondly, the EDL is alligned to a lot of arch-conservative ideologes (both in the UK and USA) and groups which utterly despise working-class revolts.
This all seems like a storm in a glass of water. Let the EDL show up, if they don't get their flimsy arses kicked like in Amsterdam they'll make buffoons out of themselves by alienating most of the working class.

If I was a professional comedian, I'd just hold up a piece of cardboard with "E" "D" and "L" on it. Should be enough to make the audience piss themselves with laughter.
They seriously consider themselves defenders of British freedom - yet seek to attack people for their beliefs and intimidate people against using their right to protest. Atleast, in theory atleast. In reality, its a nice day out for these socially backwards, alcoholic (sorry to stereotype - there are a few members of the EDL who would otherwise be good citizens, but face it, look at the majority of them) old men, where they can get pissed and attack a few innocents (Anyone will do - anyone with a skin tone darker than "Ghost white" is a jihadist and anyone white is a "red") and claim its politics.
Not even to mention how above their weight they are punching. The student protests are a nationwide campaign backed by millions, with the support of virtually the entirety of the left wing and most of the centre. The EDL has what, less than 2000 people who actually care? And less than 1000 will turn up on the day. It appears to be a case of a shitty little salmon threatening a T-Rex.

Indeed, let's see them turn up and try to take the students on the next time the latter stage a big demo. Should turn out to be the biggest mass suicide we've ever seen in the UK.
