What exactly does this mean and what are the criticisms and arguments for it and against it? Is it basically compulsory labor? I've been reading Terrorism and Communism and this is mentioned but i'm not really sure I understand it.

My understanding is that after the victory over Denikin's armies in the Don and Kolchak's armies in Siberia and the Urals during the Russian Civil War, Trotsky began turning his attention from military to economic policies. As part of this, he attempted to fulfill simple economic tasks such as clearing railway lines or gathering timber by transforming sections of the Red Army into 'Labour Armies'. At the time the Soviet Union also developed a system of 'Universal Labour Mobilisation', based on theses put forward by Trotsky and supported by Lenin and Bukharin, whereby workers and peasants were conscripted to perform various jobs. The arguments for it would probably be that the Soviet economy was devastated by years of world war followed by civil war and economic collapse and drastic measures needed to be taken in reconstruction. I'm not overly familiar with the issue though, hopefully others with better knowledge will weigh in.

Does anyone know why this is supposedly something most people disagree with Trotsky on? Too Authoritarian?

Probably, That's what I felt. Good in principle but not good in action. Too restrictive and authoritarian. :hammersickle::trotski::hammersickle:

Hugo Chavez used Militarization of Labour. Militarization of Labour means using armed forces on social service. Or the military as a labour force.
From wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Bolivar_2000
The Plan Bolivar 2000 was a unique idea of Chavez. He wanted it to be implemented in three stages. Pro-Pais which is stage one would involve the armed forces working in the capacity of social service. The Pro-Patria, the second stage, would mean the military helping local communities help themselves. Pro-Nacion, the third stage, would help the country to be a more self-sufficient economy that can sustain itself. Chavez’s social policies are where his contribution weights the most because of the amount of money being redirected to the people rather than to personal Swiss accounts.

Ok, Labor Armies. I don't really disagree with that. I mean, yeah kind of authoritarian but I'm sure it has benefits of helping communities that need it.
