The Left party's parliamentary leader Gregor Gysi was left with some explaining to do after an American diplomatic cable revealed he apparently told US Ambassador Philip Murphy that his party's opposition to NATO was only for show.
According to news magazine Der Spiegel, Gysi told Murphy that The Left party's official policy on NATO – that it should be abolished and replaced by a new security alliance including Russia – was only a ruse to prevent a more dangerous policy – Germany's withdrawal from the alliance – from gaining ground in the party.
Gysi was reportedly in "a sociable and chatty mood" when he made the claim, saying that The Left's official policy was unrealistic anyway, as the dissolution of NATO would require the agreement of the US, France and Britain.
Moderates in The Left party now fear that Gysi's loose talk might lead party extremists to renew calls for Germany to leave NATO.
Gysi himself said he cannot remember what was said during his conversation with Murphy, but suggested there may have been translation difficulties, since "the conversation was in German."
But Gysi vehemently denied another accusation in the leaked cable: that he boasted he alone was responsible for The Left party's recent success in Germany. "That is definitely wrong," he said.

Oh my, that's a shame. I'm not that surprised to be honest. The Left Party seems like a dead end.
Props to wikileaks for this. Discrediting the fake anti-NATO politicians is a very good thing.

What pressure could the US exert on a party with abysmal power?

What incentive would an American diplomat have to lie about this? America wants to tackle anti-NATO elements in Europe, not willfully ignore them.

If there were blatant lies in it, the media, especially the Murdoch empire, would be all over it and Glenn Beck would be saying how this is a communist plot (oh wait, he does that with anything anyway, lol). That there haven't been such "uncovering the lies" stories yet, tells me all I need.
As for Gysi: Well well, aren't we looking stupid now? The sooner that rightwing jackass moves out, the better.

Just like _any_ party and politicians, what they say and do are two completely different worlds. Same contrast between being in opposition and government obviously. Plus many members are still stuck in times past. They really need to take responsibility for many of the things that happened in the DDR instead of hiding and protecting criminals within their ranks. They oughta clean up and process their history... many of these same people demanded the same from the previous generation that witnessed the Nazi era.
It's nice to see that they are currently twice as popular than the free-market liberal party FDP, though - in terms that people apparently want social change - but I have no doubt that should they ever make it into the federal government people will be _very_ disappointed.

Well, go check out the thread(s) on the lie of Michael Moore's Sicko film being banned in Cuba (it wasn't banned at all).
Stupid and comical, actually.

Google Translation of http://www.n-tv.de/politik/Gysi-provoziert-Parteilinke-article2197651.html :
The member of parliament Ulla Jelpke, however, remained in its demand for a withdrawal of Germany from the military alliance and requested an opinion Gysi. "NATO's withdrawal of Germany was my stance and will remain so for some time, I will also call at the party," she told the Mirror. " NATO was "a war alliance." Gysi had to explain whether the conversation had taken place in November indeed so. "If this were the case, it would be adventurous and an affront to the party's left," said Jelpke.
Similarly, the deputy Sevim Dagdelen was quoted as saying: "We have in the program make it clear that we are dealing with the dissolution of NATO mean business and anchor steps, such as the withdrawal of Germany from the military formation of NATO in the program."

Big fuckin deal. DieLinke's "left" politics is about gay marieges and bourgeois antiracism. There is not a single drop of real class RED politics in it.Its what we call the "pink Left". The most fucked up thing,is that there is no other Left in Germany that can be considered serious and trust worthy.
PS.There is also antideutch:laugh:

The lies aren't by Wikileaks, the point is that the diplomats sending the cables often lie to their bosses for their own ends.
