Chavez-Popeye gets some Spinach. It should be interesting how he will use it.

"You won't be able to make a single law, 'pitiyanquis,'" Chavez said, using one of his favorite insults, which refers to U.S. collaborators and translates as "little Yankees." "We're going to see how you make laws now."
That's hillarious. :thumbup1:
Edit: If I wasn't a fan of Chavez and unfamiliar to the Venezuelan sitation, I would probably be worried. It's our job to educate people that this is not a power-grab, but a move to make sure the people of his country are taken care of, and a move to prevent greedy opposition forces (with only self-interest in mind) from regaining too much power.

Read the Venezuela Analysis report on the subject.
The mainstream media is making it look like he is usurping power and taking complete control.

To be a "dictator" which is apparently the meme they're trying to dig up again (paving the road for another coup attempt), the government would have to be unresponsive to the constitution and to the citizenry. Neither seems to be the case.

There's a liberal forum I read once in a blue moon, and the folks there are reacting to this with hyperbole about tin-pot dictators, banana republics and references to the burning of the Reichstag, I shit you not.

Not sure which article he means.
Anyway, I thought Chávez had already given himself absolute totalitarian power in 2005, 2007 and 2009? How absolute can you get?

were the floods even mentioned in the original article? Of course Chavez is using the floods to secure more gains against the opposition, but the measures were approved because of the disaster, not because of dictatorial ambitions.

The MSNBC article mentions the flood (while some haven't), but it's going towards the angle that he is using it as a means to cement his dictatorship. The way it's worded in many places is an intentional comparison to Hitler's (GODWIN'S LAW) own action in securing emergency powers.
To me though it just seems similar to when authorities declare a state of emergency really. I don't really think Chavez would need to do this anyways to secure his state power, mainly because even with the presence of the opposition in the chamber, they aren't in such a size that would hamper his ability to pass legislation.

The opposition almost toppled him with no major viable opposition in actual power.
I would hope he would take pre-caution with them finally in actual positions of influence.
That is why he sneered at them as "pitiyanquis". He knows where their alliance will be when decisions are made.
