Students perform autopsy on teacher

Posted Sat Dec 18, 2010 10:50am AEDT

It was their first ever autopsy, but students at one of Sweden's top medical schools were faced with a familiar sight in the classroom: the body on the table belonged to their late teacher.

"The first autopsy is really, really emotional, and we autopsied someone we knew!," one of the shocked students told news agency TT on Friday.

"I feel something in the routines went a bit wrong," said another.

Chief physician Birgitta Sundelin called the event "extremely unfortunate".

She said that students were normally informed ahead of time of whose body they were to examine and that it was also the case this time.

But according to a student, the class did not find out until they saw their teacher's name on the body's toe tag.

The head of the department, Tina Dalianis, said she regretted the incident, but added the students needed to learn the tricks of the trade.

"It's terrible, but it's part of education sometimes. Unfortunately they have to deal with it," she said.

I like the head of the department's attitude. Personally if I were a medical student, I would be honoured to perform an autopsy on whoever taught me. I wonder if it was some kind of final prank on the teacher's part? That would be hilarious.

You have a somewhat morbid sense of humour. I think I'd be kind of freaked at seeing someone I know dead, and having to perform an autopsy on them (or in fact seeing anybody dead), but that's why I'm not a medical student I suppose haha.

One good thing about working w/ dead people is the fact that there's a lot of job security involved in the trade, as people never stop dying. Being a mortician for example pays pretty well, plus you don't really have to worry about being laid off. Of course the downside is that a lot of people will think that you have a creepy job.

Maybe I should become a Mortician?

If you can handle working with corpses and won't mind people speculating about what you do with them behind close doors, why not?

Aren't you a mechanic, though? Doesn't that have a fairly high rating as far as job security goes?

This thread reminds me of this song.

I have the album that song is on ("Dance With Me"). It's actually a really underrated punk album, IMO.

That's a good album, probably on par with Static Age as far as best horror punk albums (despite it being a pretty small genre). Autopsies aren't exactly like what's described in that song, though.

This could totally be the premise of a B horror movie.

I know, but this comment made me think of fucking dead people..

If they're normally told who they're doing a PM on, then they should have been in this case. I can't imagine why they wouldn't have been.
