Posted at 2:11 p.m. and updated with better sound: The first version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fctDFORJKQ) of the video we posted included a cacophony from talk radio (presumably playing inside the patrol car) in the left channel. We've removed the left audio channel in the video below so you can hear Officer Birk's mic much more clearly as he gives commands to Williams and recounts the events to officers afterward.
Here's the just-released, 17-minute video taken from the dashboard camera of Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk's patrol car before, during, and after he fatally shot John T. Williams (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/the-buck-stops-with-nobody/Content?oid=4832659):
Just after 1:00 minute, the video shows Williams shuffling across the street—carrying a board and minding his own business—in front of Birk's squad car. Birk jumps out and yells, "Hey, put the knife down." Then Birk follows Williams out of the frame. After two more commands (audible while the men are off screen) there are shots fired that killed Williams. A woman is also shown crossing the street who appears to witness the whole things from maybe 20 feet away.
After 2:00, Officer Birk says, "Ma'am, he had a knife and he wouldn't drop it."
At 2:30, backup cars arrive.
At about 3:00, a voice (probably Birk's) says, "Yeah, I am okay. He had the knife open." (The investigation has since said that police found the knife closed (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/11/09/knife-of-john-t-williams-was-closed-after-shooting).)
At 5:10 minutes, another officer can be heard telling Birk, "You did the right thing. Hang in there, Ian."

from the comments:
1:53 - "Did you just shoot him?!"
2:03 - "He didn't do anything!"
to which he replies, "Ma'am he had a knife and wouldn't drop it."
She saw. She knew.
This is terrifying. No announcement that the man is a police officer, in seven seconds he goes from yelling at someone while their back is turned to firing five shots. Absolutely terrifying.

. . .disgusting.
Brings back memories of Rodney King, yet somehow, where's the people in the streets? Where's the rioting?
If Rodney King's trial deserved rioting in '92, doesn't this deserve something?

Give it some time. There'll be protests if this becomes more aware. Just spread the news far and wide!

an native homeless? they had an candlelight vigil. thats all he is going to get i'm afraid. Even enough "leftists" here dont have any time for "lumpen"
its why cops shoot homeless, its why serial killers hunt prosititutes, its why illegals are taken advantage off. No one cares enough except the other homeless, the prostitutes, the illegals and they cant afford to raise their voice.

Fucking disgusting.
I'm surprised by the comments, though. Usually the comments will be filled with people who defend the cop, no matter what, but this time, everyone is against him.

Give it some time. There'll be protests if this becomes more aware. Just spread the news far and wide!My girlfriend is from Seattle, her father lives there, my best friend has moved there, and I plan on someday perhaps moving there. For somebody who has never been to Seattle, I have some serious Seattle connections.
At that time I was still active in guns and hoses (not to support PD, I support FD; not so much recently, but I have a number of good friends and colleagues in FD.) Emergency response events and rumors transcend departments, and EMS, FD, PD.
Yet this is the first I've heard of this incident. The date on the video was what, April? I am actually amazed and somewhat disturbed that I hadn't heard of it before.
I can only assume that either I've been completely oblivious, or that this incident has not had any publicity. We can try to spread the word, but I'm afraid that it's probably too few, and as Psycho pointed out, nobody cares about the homeless.

No matter what scenario where a "perpetrator" has a knife (assume he was a threat, unlikely since the knife was found unopened, but I'll go with what was actually in the frame), their firearm should be last resort, well behind taser, pepper spray, etc.
I couldn't tell exactly, but I think there were 6 shots. That is well over what is required for incapacitation. They were also in rapid succession. There was not one shot, then a pause to see if the "perp" surrendered or was incapacitated.
There is no leg to stand on defending the cop.

I'm relieved with that! Always annoying when stupid shit goes down and someone dies as a result, and people tend to buy the statements the police release to try and get out of it (he resisted arrest, it looked like a gun, etc etc).

It seems there isn't. Then again, it seemed the same with the Oscar Grant case, so I won't get my hopes too high.

SEATTLE -- Protesters took to the streets again Friday night in a demonstration against police brutality. But this time, the tension escalated with protesters engaging police and officers responding with pepper spray.
It was the second march through Seattle since Wednesday, when King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg announced he would not file charges (http://www.king5.com/news/local/Seattle-officer-wont-be-charged-in-woodcarver-shooting-116324949.html) against Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk. Birk shot and killed John T. Williams, a native woodcarver, last August.
"Arrest Birk now," some protesters chanted.
The demonstrators halted traffic as they walked from one end of downtown to another, chanting "No justice, no peace, no racist police!" They were followed closely by numerous police officers on bicycles, horseback and on foot.
It seemed some protesters came ready to pick a fight with police. When a faction tested the police line, bicycle officers opened up with pepper spray. Officers also moved in after some rocks and bottles were lobbed at them. A patrol car window was also broken out.
The crowd stopped in front of the King County Jail, headed southbound toward Pioneer Square, then circled back toward Westlake Center before heading to Capitol Hill. There were reports of protesters lying in the middle of the road at 5th Avenue and Pine Street.
"I don't believe that this is actually going to accomplish anything," said one protester. "but, at least people are doing something."
Police said they were keeping an eye on one core group of protesters who seemed to be there just to instigate.
Another demonstration (http://www.king5.com/home/Protestors-116368664.html) on Wednesday night lasted a couple of hours, but no damage had been reported.
Although Satterberg said he could not charge Birk under state law, a Seattle Police Department review board determined the shooting was unjustified. Birk resigned (http://www.king5.com/home/Seattle-Police-officer-who-shot-and-killed-woodcarver--116360914.html) Wednesday afternoon.

My friend, this is not news, this is like apple pie. USA, the home of the free and brave. A Seattle cop just murdered a homeless man. USA pain and blood since 1600, 400 years of depression and frustration, what a hell and the evil thing is that millions of people in USA love cops and support this police-fascist dictatorship. Most americans have a computer chip in their brain that reads: "Thank you God, for making me a slave"

These people are supposed to serve and protect
To makes things more sense, they are actually serving & protecting the wealthy few from anyone below (working classes, lumpen, etc) which is how capitalism works which is the major blame here.
Basically the entire the purpose of the police is to protect the bourgeoisie and keeping their slaves (the workers, etc)/"failures of society (the 'homeless')" under control or depose of them.
