BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Bolivia announced Friday its recognition of a fully sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Israel.
President Evo Morales made the announcement in Brazil at a conference with regional leaders, Bolivia's Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
“Bolivia recognizes the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, like Brazil and Argentina,” Morales was quoted as saying.
In Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its efforts were ongoing to secure recognitions of statehood from countries throughout Latin America.
President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the move.
He thanked Bolivia for its support and praised bilateral relations. The Bolivian president phoned Abbas three days in advance of the announcement, officials said.
Norway announced Wednesday that it upgraded the Palestinian representative's office in Oslo to a diplomatic mission to support Palestinian efforts toward building a state.
The announcement came while Ramallah's premier Salam Fayyad was in Oslo, where officials announced the coming international donors conference would take place in the city in April 2011.

According to Bolivia's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Bolivian President Evo Morales announced the decision during the Mercosur (Southern Common Market) conference with South American leaders in Brazil.
“Bolivia recognizes the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, following Brazil and Argentina,” Morales stated. The Bolivian president phoned Mahmoud Abbas three days before the announcement, officials said.
In Ramallah, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas thanked Bolivia for its support and encouraged other leaders to support the recognition of the Palestinian state.
In addition, Abbas was reported to be having similar conversations with the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, who has shown interest in following the lead of Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia in recognizing a Palestinian state.
The announcement was made while Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad is in Oslo setting up an office for the Palestinian representative there, in an attempt to increase the diplomatic status of the Palestinian delegation.
Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Sunday that another 10 European nations plan to establish a Palestinian delegation in their countries.
Erekat also stated that support of the international community is now more important than ever, due to the recent recognitions of the Palestinian state on the 1967 border.
“The Palestinian people will not stop seeking their freedom through all peaceful channels and means available,” Erekat told reporters.

The news was announced by the Palestinian ambassador to Brazil Ibrahim al-Zaben.
According to the information released, the embassy will be constructed in the north of Brasilia, next to other national embassies; it will cost $14 million and will consist of 22-dunum track of land, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued in a statement.
In addition, the Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated on Monday, coinciding with his farewell party in Rio de Janeiro, that peace in the Middle East is impossible with the United States as a mediator and added that "It is important to develop other elements, other countries which could mediate."
Recently, politicians like the former U.S. President Jimmy Carter have supported the active role of Brazil in the Middle East conflict.
"We cannot count on the United States alone to bring peace, since it agrees with almost everything Israel does," Carter said.
The news comes a month after Brazil officially recognized a Palestinian state among its 1967 border with Israel, a decision that has been followed by neighbors Argentina and Bolivia. Ecuador is reported to be making similar moves.
There are approximately 50,000 Palestinians living in Brazil, most of them refugees from the 1948 Nakba. http://www.imemc.org/article/60229
