Good afternoon, comrades. I am 18, Korean, and living in Chicago. I come from a largely proletarian background with some petit-bourgoisie roots, unfortunately. I became interested in revolutionary left-wing thought after reading Marx's works and learning about the worker's struggle in Korea.

I'm currently jumping around helping my father/uncle at their work. I cannot afford the tuition at most colleges, and it didn't help that I went through a bout of depression during high school that made my grades suffer. I am looking forward to getting back on track, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I enjoy playing Viola, reading, writing, and playing video games. I'm also interested in learning how to sing, and how to speak Korean more fluently.

I am not part of any revolutionary left organizations yet, but I am interested in finding one. It also seems that there are many tendencies and factions on this forum and I am still trying to find out what I'm comfortable with. I hope to learn, and most importantly, grow as a person through learning about leftist thought and by being active in the scene.

Thank You,

AFiretrUCKYOUth

Hello and welcome.

Have you applied for a Pell grant? Fill out a
FAFSA (http://www.fafsa.com/?rf=0;pku3at%3Dzg50002a&cm_mmc=Ggle+0710a+NEW+Google+AdWords-_-FAFSA_Exact-_-fafsa+-+exact-_-Z09) form; can't hurt. Got me through school.

If I recall, IL also has an equivalent to FAFSA. It's been a while though, so I'm not sure. If I find it, I'll let you know.

Additionally, you can get more grants, scholarships, etc. for a number of things. If you're going to school for a particular career (I know many nurses who did this), if you're a first generation college student (helped me), etc.
You mentioned that you're Korean: that qualifies you for some minority scholarships.

You also mentioned you play the Viola and want to learn to sing. There are some programs, such as the Whitstone Award, where you can apply, and if accepted, may offer reduced or free music lessons to gain access to an arts education.

Finally, don't worry about your grades too much. If you go to a community college for a couple years and have decent grades, perhaps get an associate degree, and have decent ACT scores (some schools put more importance in SATs, but in our region ACT is preferred, and required for IL high school students if I remember), a university is likely to over-look poor performance in high school.
