I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate part of the forum to post this, if not I apologize.

There is a new documentary out about Julian Assange and the history/implications of Wikileaks. You can watch all four parts on youtube. I'd post link but I don't have such privileges yet.

http://openleaks.org/ is for me the biggest surprise, but there were bound to be split offs and clone attempts I guess. This is a good thing.

I'm almost at the point where I'm ready to entertain conspiracy theories surrounding wikileaks. I've yet to see anything surprising. Innocent people being murdered in war? Various states spying on each other? Preparations for war with Iran?

Coming up next is a huge push by the state for some sort of cyber security that will make the patriot act look like childs play. The real story going on is a massive attack on workers around the globe during this crisis. This is the real 'history changing news'.

Maybe I was expecting more from the releases but thus far the only thing I see coming from this are some draconian internet laws.

At first I was supportive of Wikileaks, but as it goes on, there's definitely a hidden agenda there and support from some nation's agencies. It's unthinkable that it would last a week without the financial and political-legal support which it is receiving from somewhere.

In the last month, there have already been several headline stories about plans to attempt to restrict certain internet activities: in the EU, a bill is coming before the European Parliament to package internet services as they do cable TV, possibly screening out undesirable content.

Power is being taken from people and from transparent regulation agencies (Data Protection and the Courts) and being placed in the hands of ISPs, who Securocrat agencies just have to lean on to get something shut down, or someone disconnected, or a record of their entire online activities.

That means no warrants, no appeals, no idea that your being monitored.

Well you can't expect the government controlled media to really have a big outburst. But obviously everyone knows America has its crimes and the theory is that when we do commit crimes, it is in public knowledge so that we can assess the problem. But the whole point of wikileaks isn't to show you a different scenario of whats happening, its to show you how to government is trying to hide these events from the publics knowledge. If they can classify anything as "secret" and hide the atrocities they are responsible for, then we are that much closer to an Orwellian "big brother."(which in my opinion has and is implemented already)

As for the response for it, you can't really expect people to just take arms. Your going to have people all walks of life putting their opinion on this, but if there is no movement behind wikileaks and if people are only waiting for the officials to really say something, then what Julian Assange is doing will go in vein.

I really hope these transparency organizations stay free of any corporate or internet regulation. They have released much more information policing the government in the past 2 days then what our mainstream media does in a 3-4 months.

I have to say though, Daniel Schmitt seems to be working a bit against wikileaks right now. Wikileaks has the power to cripple government moves right now with all this information and Schmitt wants to bring out a book, bringing transparency to Julian Assange and wikileaks at a crucial time.

Point taken.

But you are approaching this situation from a position of educated understanding of the socio-political and economic realities of the United States, not from the 'everyday person's' position which may, or may not, maintain the same perspective as yourself.

It is highly likely that many people were not aware of certain issues before the press covered certain wikileaks releases.

I agree that the issue of wikileaks will be the beginning of the big movements towards control of the internet, but this discussion and debate was bound to happen - at least it happened over something serious like the massive leaking of governmental documents and secret information rather than something like 'sexting.'

I'll look for it on youtube. thanks for letting me know about it.
I happen to spend a lot of time on youtube, I'm actually trying to cut back.
I'm fighting the urge to promote my channels.
