BBC story here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-11989296).

The new Spanish language website will be officially launched later on Tuesday but it is already up and running with nearly 20,000 entries on ecured.cu

The site says the aim is to spread knowledge without a profit motive.
...

According to Ecured, it was developed "to create and disseminate the knowledge of all and for all, from Cuba and with the world".

"Its philosophy is the accumulation and development of knowledge, with a democratising, not profitable, objective, from a decolonizer point of view."
The entry on the United States, for example, describes it as the "empire of our time, which has historically taken by force territory and natural resources from other nations, to put at the service of its businesses and monopolies".

"It consumes 25% of the energy produced on the planet and in spite of its wealth, more than a third of its population does not have assured medical attention," the article says.

...

Ecured claims that the US has always wanted to take over the Caribbean island. The entry says US leaders have looked upon Cuba "like those who admire a beautiful fruit that will end up falling in their hands".

I don't like some of the wording in the article. That last paragraph, for example. Ecured isn't claiming anything by saying that American imperialism has always lusted after Cuba. Presidents dating back to Jefferson have expressed acquiring Cuba as a goal. They, in fact, used the fruit metaphor for Cuba. Cubans aren't making it up themselves, they're pretty much quoting Americans.

The ripe fruit thing came from John Quincy Adams.

Who is "they"? Have you even understood the whole concept of Wikipedia? It's ran by the community, everyone can edit it, so there is no "they". It's an open project and not part of the corporate media industry. Your paranoid world view to see a pro-American conspiracy everywhere outside your ideological ghetto is quiet ridiculous. Pseudonyms

The name Stalin ("made of steel", derived from Russian stal, steel, with the same personal possessive suffix in which Lenin used) it came into use from 1912 and from October 1917 became his nickname.

Colloquially, and among his closest comrades, was known as "Soso", and he even used the pseudonym "Soselo" to sign his poems. Also referred to himself as "Koba", named after a popular hero of Georgia. [1] Other names used were David, Morti, Nijeradze, Chízhikov, Ivanovich. In Spanish, some historians have changed their name to Joseph Stalin.
Biography
Early

The son of a humble shoemaker Georgian Stalin at fifteen was admitted with a scholarship to the Orthodox seminary in Tbilisi, which was revealed as a brilliant student, but was removed to be surprised while distributing propaganda Georgian Socialist Party, which had entered in 1898.

As continue his revolutionary activities in 1902 was arrested and deported to Siberia. Two years later, Stalin managed to escape and return to Tbilisi, where he joined the Bolshevik wing of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). Intervened in the revolution of 1905 and Baku in the strikes of 1907, after which he was again arrested and sent to Siberia, from where he fled in 1911.

Stalin then joined the Central Committee of RSDLP and appointed chairman of the Politburo, traveled to Vienna, where he wrote Marxism and the problem of nationalities and finally adopted the nickname of Stalin (steel).

Lenin contacted and charged with the publication of Pravda, but was arrested in Petrograd, he remained in prison until 1917, when Bolshevik Revolution broke out in February. After the failure of this and the progress of Finland Lenin, Stalin became head of Pravda, while taking an active part in the preparation of a new revolt.

At the outbreak of the October Revolution, Stalin was part of the revolutionary government as commissioner of nationalities, a post he held until 1922 and in which year he wrote the Declaration of the rights of the peoples of Russia, a text that heralded the organization of the Soviet state.
Rise to power

During the civil war, Stalin worked effectively in the defense of Petrograd and Tsaritsyn, the city which was later the name Stalingrad. Elected General Secretary of Central Committee in 1922, worked to seize control of the party apparatus despite the objections of Lenin, who in his will expressed reservations about Stalin, because of some attitudes assumed by the driving apparatus State and party.

After Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin was able to gain absolute power and allied himself with Zinoviev and Kamenev to defend the idea of socialism in one country against the "permanent revolution" and the spread of socialism advocated by Trotsky.

Once Trotsky had been eliminated from the struggle for political power, Stalin joined with Bukharin and Rykov against Zinoviev and Kamenev, reminding everyone of the recent vote against the insurrection in 1917. Zinoviev and Kamenev then joined Lenin's widow, Krupskaya, formed the "United Opposition" in July 1926.

In 1929, during the XV Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), Trotsky and Zinoviev were expelled from the party and Kamenev lost his seat on the Central Committee. Stalin soon turned against the rightist opposition represented by the time allies, Bukharin and Rykov.

One of the favorite arguments of Stalin to attack other party members, was the struggle against the existence of factions, which had been banned temporarily in the Bolshevik Party during the Civil War, but were part of the history of Bolshevism.

Having also defeated the rightist opposition of Bukharin, Stalin began plans for collectivization and industrialization. Stalin had gained complete control over the party and the country. But Stalin feared that opposition groups still remain within the party, so he decided to dismiss members who could not trust, especially in the Red Army officers.
Industrialization

No initial investment, low international trade and virtually no modern infrastructure, Stalin's government financed industrialization from the profit made by the factories and state enterprises, by trade, banks and transportation.

In 1926-1927, it invested in the industry about a billion rubles, three years later, and it could invest some 5,000 million.

The 1930 production won for the first time in the history of the Soviet Union, a wide range of new products, including highlighting motorcycles, watches and cameras, as well as machines and tools needed to produce these and other property. In the chemical industry was the development of the plastics industry, in metallurgy developed new types of high quality alloys and various non-ferrous metals were manufactured for the first time.

Also markedly improved scale and efficiency with which existing products were made. In the iron and steel in the late 1930's, the average size of the new smelter was 40% greater than those of just 10 years earlier. Many innovations were based solely on local technical developments. In the aircraft industry, for example, Soviet engineers were planes that were comparable to foreign designs in the defense industry, meanwhile, developed tanks that had no equivalent in the Western world. The Soviet Union was also the first country to produce synthetic rubber polybutadiene.
International and internal consolidation

To avoid isolation of the Soviet country, decided the entry of the USSR into the League of Nations (1934), and the approach to Britain and France. In domestic policy sought to eliminate any opposition: between 1936 and 1938 organized processes (Moscow) and deportations against the main military and all opposition within the party and state.

Moreover, even in the first Stalinist period, even before the 1930's, large sections of Soviet society agreed with optimism the great advances of the Revolution. Russia was the only country where women were paid the same as men for similar work.
World War II

On August 23, 1939, the Soviet Union and Germany signed in Moscow a nonaggression pact, which also in an additional protocol secret, aEuropa divided East and Central areas of Soviet influence and German, and establishes guidelines for the partition of Poland between the two states. Also in this protocol gave Stalin a free hand to intervene in Finland and the Baltic countries.

Fidel Castro has said on this:

"I think the imperialist plans to throw Hitler against the USSR would never have justified the pact between Hitler and Stalin, it was very hard. The communist parties, which were characterized by discipline, were all obliged to defend the Molotov-Ribbentrop and bleed politically. "

Once started the Second World War, however, Hitler and considering England's fall was imminent, ordered the attack on the Soviet Union, making the agreement a dead letter. On December 18, 1940, the German command decided that the invasion of the USSR (Operation Barbarossa) would be held in April 1941 but could only realize the 22 June this year when it launched the attack on Soviet soil more than 3,000,000 German soldiers. The invasion took her by complete surprise to Stalin, despite having sufficient background through his spy Richard Sorge that this was imminent.

Stalin locked himself in the Kremlin in an apparent depression and lack of leadership and reacted only 10 days later, to regain control with a firm hand.

The Red Army, severely weakened by the purges of the late 30's, was virtually without authority control, as German forces advanced rapidly through the western plains of the USSR.

Stalin's initial measures to contain the German invasion were ineffective and could not stop the advance of Hitler's armored forces penetrated deep into Soviet territory. While Stalin was initially hesitant and irresolute by the sudden and overwhelming attack of the Germans, soon began to take control of the situation and appointed himself Supreme Commander of the Red Army. Unlike Hitler, Stalin gave his generals autonomy in making decisions and he brought from the border to some of his best generals like Zhukov and Vatutin, also allowing the dispatch from the eastern front of thousands of troops trained and Siberian in combat with the Japanese.

The Red Army stopped the Nazi offensive at the Battle of Stalingrad, from late 1942 through early, with the greatest turning point, and moved into Eastern Europe to Berlin before Germany surrendered in 1945. [2]

In its advance freed many European and Asian nations engulfed by the military machinery of Hitler's racist. Although devastated by war, the Soviet Union emerged from the conflict as an acknowledged superpower. Suffered more than 27 million casualties, military and civilian, throughout the conflict.

The Soviet Union was the country fighter who endured almost 80% of the German attack, so that victory in the Battle of Stalingrad and the subsequent counter-offensive meant the collapse of the German war machine. Although devastated by war, the Soviet Union emerged from the conflict as an acknowledged superpower. [3]
Last days

Since 1950 the health of Stalin, who already had 70 years of age, began to worsen. His memory failed, was running easily and overall worsened. Vladimir Vinogradov, his personal physician, was diagnosed with acute hypertension. Vinogradov proposed a treatment based on pills or injections and advised Stalin to abandon or at least reduced its roles in government. Yet Stalin refused to take any medicine to stop any work and also fired Vinogradov.

On Sunday night March 1 was found lying on the floor, dressed in the clothes he wore last night and barely able to speak. Some doctors have ruled that Stalin had suffered a stroke and had fallen struck.

He died at 22:10 on 5 March.
Errors

In Stalin's mistakes before the fascist aggression in the USSR was removed from their military posts courageous and brave officers of the civil war, with military experience, keeping the Red Army without experienced leadership needed to confront the soldiers Nazis.

Errors of Stalin at this time the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz states:

"... Another serious mistake was in June 1941 when the Germans had concentrated million men and thousands of planes, tens of thousands of tanks and armored cars, hundreds of border divisions mobilized no troops .(...) and any country, when he sees that an attack is imminent, the first thing to do is a general mobilization ... " (Fidel Castro. "A Grain of Corn", 1990).

After Stalin's death, his successor, Nikita Khrushchev, presented to the plenary of the twentieth congress of the Communist Party in 1956, a report on the political mistakes and crimes committed by Stalin, deploring the cult of personality and initiating a campaign of de-Stalinization .

Content aside, it is good to see Cuban sites popping up here and there. I do see some videos on youtube get hits from Cuba on the viewing statistics as well. I guess it would be easier for them to have their own, considering how many other countries use the "Spanish" mirror and with the consideration that many of them might be apologists for various dictators (Pinochet, Batista, Franco, Stroessner, Brazilian and Argentine military leaders, etc). I'm supposing they'd rather start their own. What ever, more power to them. I remember someone here awhile back posted a forum too, that was pretty interesting.

BTW, for those of you who want to get on the site, make sure you do www.ecured.cu on your browser. Just putting ecured.cu won't get you there.

I gave one before. It is related to his position, because an ordinary Wikipedia editor (or even most Admins, Bureaucrats, etc.) would not be able to use Wikimedia Foundation money for expensive dinners.

I never claimed that he hides his political ideas from his entry, so what is your point? I believe even the entry implies that he considers Wikipedia an exercise in objectivism, which you certainly can't deny if you've ever tried participating for a prolonged period.

On the other hand, he has for a long time used his position to prevent anyone from asserting that there was another co-founder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger. But apparently, nowadays, he admits that he is not the "Sole Founder".

That's hardly relevant to the content of Wikipedia. Being guilty of embezzlement is not the same thing as being guilty of influencing thousands of articles.

Who is "they"? Have you even understood the whole concept of Wikipedia? It's ran by the community, everyone can edit it, so there is no "they".

Of course there is. There is a body of admins - what is often called the "wikicracy". These are practically unrecallable and have no terms, which means unless they systematically make huge blunders, they can get their way, whatever such way is.

It's an open project and not part of the corporate media industry. It certainly isn't part of the "corporate media industry" in the same sence as the Washington Post, Der Spiegel, or Fox News are. But it certainly is a corporation and it certainly makes profits.

I'm even quiet sure that Wikipedia is much more neutral than this Cuban propaganda tool.I haven't perused this "Cuban propaganda tool" and I don't doubt it is quite obviously biased. And I have no intention nor mandate to defend it. But the idea that Wikipedia is "neutral" is laughable. As it is edited by anyone, it reflects the preconceptions and prejudices of the "public", ie, common sence at its worst.

I have extensively tried to edit it; but as I edited articles that relied on sources in Portuguese, and most admins know no Portuguese, I have been repeatedly reverted by people who go as far as purposefully misrepresent the sources in order to maintain "their" version of facts. No easy task, I assure you.

So, be wary of anything written in Wikipedia, particularly of articles about subjects with few or no sources in English.

I have checked out the website. It still needs lot of development, wikipedia actually has more info on Che =/

It is also obviosly biased towards the cuban goverment ruling party.

Nevertheless still an interesthing project, I do think though that wikipedia and this website are biased except I consider the chance for wikipedia to be neutral more likely than this one.
