nah, this was to be expected and long time in the making. the DVU was going nowhere and the NPD is in financial and juridcal problems, merging with an non-nazi extreme right party will protect them against an ban under the german anti-nazi laws.
its going to be intresting too see what the reaction of the radical/freiekamaradschaften/AutonomusNationalists around the NPD that despise the DVU and parlamentarism is going to be to this.

The DVU, despite having 4000 members on paper, couldn't even mobilize 100 to their Parteitag about the fusion. Apparently the majority of those were 50 years or older. The DVU's founder took the 980.000 euro the party owes him on his own account to enable the fusion.

I think it's safe to say that the party is largely dead, their fusion with the NPD, as psycho pointed out, had some benefits for both.

TBH, the biggest threat that COULD come out of this would be them hopping over the 5% in the next elections and entering parliament, but even if you combine the votes the both individual parties got in the last election it's only 1,5%+0,1% secondary and 1,8% primary votes (DVU didn't get any primaries). Hardly worth mentioning. And of course there's also the possibility of some turning away after this fusion.
