One person has been killed and at least one other hurt as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, police say.
A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby minutes later, AP news agency quoted police as saying.
A man's body was discovered after the second blast, the agency reported.
Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper showed images of a burning white car. The cause of the blasts is not yet known.
Rescue services spokesman Roger Sverndal said the car which exploded had contained gas canisters, AP reported.
A former AP worker, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.
"I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock," he told the agency.
"There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."
Aftonbladet said police had cordoned off the area and emergency services were at the scene.

Do they have any idea who did this?

Let's hope. They actually caught a small group of nazis a couple of years ago that had some pretty serious plans for a series of bombings.

Judging by the video on the BBC article, the second at least hardly even deserves the title 'blast'...so we can assume that whoever did it either wasn't particularly good at the 'art' of car bombings or was pretty much just leaving a horse's head in Stockholm's bed, so to speak. Rather than trying to cause some serious collateral damage. But the first may have been larger, or maybe the video didn't do the 'blast' justice...

they dont even know yet wheter it was an bomb, its not completly uncomon to be transporting gas botles in an car, maybe it was just an accident

edit: in the vid you can also see that the 2nd "explosion" is just an small explosion that originates in the burning car, its not an second car exploding "classic multiple car bomb scenario" as the reports seemded to indicate

True! I didn't even notice that the flames were already there...but of course there's the issue that one might assume that two going off in quick succession might make it more likely to be an intentional thing...don't ask me, though, we'll see what comes out of it, though. But c'mon, look at the time, and how empty the streets were at that time. If it was an intentional bombing, I don't think it was intended to harm anybody. More just instil terror, if it was, in fact, terrorism. Of course we (that is to say the Jewish community) are hardly strangers to the idea of pretty weak makeshift 'bombs' breaking a window or two and doing relatively little damage otherwise. As if to say 'we could do a lot worse, you know, if we wanted to', like a typical Hashshashin, I suppose...

One person has died and two have been injured in two almost simultaneous explosions in central Stockholm.
Swedish news agency TT said that it and the Security Police had received an email about ten minutes before two explosions in the capital city Stockholm.
The agency said the mail had sound files in both Swedish and Arabic attached.
It said that the voice on the sound file addressed Sweden and the Swedish people and talked about Sweden's silence over the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed by artist Lars Vilks and Sweden's presence in Afghanistan.
TT quoted the man on the sound file as saying; 'Our actions will talk for themselves. As long as you do not end your war against Islam and humiliation of the prophet and your stupid support for the pig Vilks.'
The first blast in the car left two people in need of hospital treatment for minor injuries, said emergency services spokesman Bengt Norberg.
A second alert was received two minutes later and one person was found dead at the scene of this second blast which took place in the street, he added.
Media reported scenes of panic in the busy Christmas shopping areas with people fleeing amidst smoke and the smell of explosives.

This will only fuel people's fears regarding islam, and likely lead to gains for far-right political groups. Depressing.

its fucked up how much in cases like these you are already sitting home going "for fucks sake i hope its wasnt an muslim"...
although when pim fortuyn was assasinated i was also doing that only to find out it was an radical leftist former squatter...
i was all "please dont let it be an muslim, please dont etc etc" and then the news said wich lawfirm he asked for (an famous leftist activist lawfirm) and only on that moment it dawned to me that this could have been and in fact was an leftist.

supressingly mostly aimed at the establishment/social-democrats, the radical left never got much flack for it. Propably mostly because volkert van der graaf (the murderer) confessed but didnt motivate his action, never made it an political trial. The last decades he was heavy into animal-rights actvism so people kind of assumed he did it because pim fortuijn had some pro-fur policies, so people just thought it was an nutcase and went to blame the secret service (for failure to protect him) and the parlementarian left (for "demonisation"). I personally doubt Volkert is as nuts as they made him out to be (court also declared him fully sane but autistic) and had very motivating reasons for his action.

Currently the Swedish Security Service is indicating they believe he was in all likelyhood not working alone and probably a part of a looser network. They seem to be looking for more. Let's hope there weren't follow up attacks planned.

Merry Christmas Magnus Ranstorp.

Now finally you could propose more draconic measures targetted against poor suburbs and certain ethnic groups and have the authorities listen!

Actually, I find some really interesting coincidences in this case;

First, Wikileaks reveal that Swedish authorities have in secret registered Swedish muslims and sent that information to the US. Just some hours after the bomb, the foreign minister puts on his twitter that "now Sweden has been hit by terrorism", even though it wasn't clear at that time that it indeed was a terrorist. On the day after, it is revealed that someone from the military sent a sms to a friend saying "keep out from Drottningatan, something will happen there" (the area where the bomb went off).

Not to say that all 7 parties except the newest one (Sweden Democrats) have officially sounded their concerns about disctimination against muslisms and that they will not cooperate with the extremists.

So, in short, the wikileak would have given muslims support, so to say, that they are mistreated and lied to by at least the two biggest parties (or, the parties most likely to be in power). Now, when this muslim has attacked "our society", well, just maybe people will agree with their mistreatment, and not view the spying as something bad after all.

Call it a conspiracy if you like, it wouldn't be the first one (Olof Palme anyone?), but these events surely are curious.

Nazis or religious extremists? What have things come to? Based on the amateurism of the whole incident i would think that it is some small, local group i.e. not Al-Qaeda/Taliban

Along with it's "core mission" of creating "jobs and welfare".

No no, it's "core mission" is to make people believe that they're doing something that will in the end create jobs, welfare and ease ethnic tensions. But reading through Wikileaks makes me think it's "core mission" is to just do what western superpowers tells it to do...
