The Ortega brothers have apparently put the monetary condition of the FSLN party before judicial principles. I had hoped for Daniel to at least provide short-term relief for the Nicaraguan people, but if these allegations are indeed true then the FSLN is even less like its original self than I thought.
The report includes stealing billions of State money and distributing it to his own family and other prominent Sandinistas following electoral defeat, blackmailing boxer Ricardo Mayorga by using judiciary control to absolve him of a rape crime in order to receive a percentage of every fight he took.
Some of these allegations may be taken from purposefully biased State Department reports and human rights complaints from anti-revolutionary intelligence from the period, and are unclear about where a lot of this reported monetary gain is being distributed.
This section particularly peaked my interest:
"Daniel and Humberto Ortega participated in the FSLN
leadership council that collectively ordered the arrest and
torture of thousands of people at prisons and prison camps
all over Nicaragua. The largest torture camp for political
prisoners was in what is now the free trade zone near
Managua,s airport. The Ortega brothers and their FSLN
associates also ordered numerous murders and disappearances,
including the killings of hundreds of Miskitos on the
Atlantic coast and the internment of thousands more in
concentration camps in 1981 and 1982."
