This (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/travelblogs/98/88432/Soda+vs.+Pop?destId=361959) is perhaps the most pertinent scientific study of our times. There is also an interactive map here (http://popvssoda.com/).
So, which is it? "Pop", "soda", "coke" (no, not that coke), or "other" (such as "soft drink")?
I am a member of "the St. Louis Soda Bubble", and proud of it.

I don't really understand the difference, nor do I think it is important.

Soda.
Interestingly enough, during the 2000 elections in the U.S. they did a survey in Florida regarding what people called soft drinks. The places that called them "pop" or "coke" all voted for Bush, while the places that called them "soda" voted for Gore. Just a little trivia for ya.

They call it coke where I live, but I generally just say soda. Fuck anyone that calls it pop.

Around where I live people call it coke, so it's what I'm used to calling it. Well, usually only things like coke and pepsi, not other soft drinks like 7up, rootbeer, Dr. Pepper, etc.

I say soda. But why the hell would you call soda "coke"? Coke is a specific type of soda.

Would anybody actually call this Coke?
Os Cangaceiros

Some people actually do, moreso in the South than other areas. People will literally say "What kind of coke do you want?" (Yeah, I think it's weird, too.)
Look at what Wiki says about it:

That map is pretty cool.
I've never heard anyone call it 'pop'. I didn't know 'coke' was even an accepted name before this thread...
In Sydney all I've ever heard it referred to as is 'fizzy drink' or 'soft drink'.
Here's another one: What do you call swinsuits (of any particular variety)?
In Aus it varies according to state: swimmers, cozzies, speedos, togs, bathers.

In Germany there is no common term for soft drinks in general, so you use the name of the drink.

On a side note on the rare occasion I'm not putting booze in it I call it "fizzy drink" because "soda" makes me sound like a yank and "pop" makes me sound like my grandparents.

I think that's why I refer to it as "pop" - my family call it that, or "fizzy pop." I've also picked up some other weird words from my family. I didn't realise that "shiny balls" wasn't a normal way of talking about baubles until I said it in secondary school and my friends found it hilarious.

Pop is music. Soda is very common, cola is specifically Coke and Pepsi type.

"Pop" is brutally reactionary and should be met with swiftly with the utmost violence.

Soda is fizzy water, pop is cheap fizzy drinks that small children drink (like panda pops), coke can refer to any type of cola, and everything else is called a fizzy drink (or a soft drink if you want to be proper )
