"Attention passengers, this is an important message from the New York City Police Department. If you see a suspicious package or activity on the platform or train, don't keep it to yourself. Tell a police officer or an MTA employee immediately. Thank you and have a nice day."

Not quite as Orwellian as the "Secure Beneath The Watchful Eyes" posters.

Hahah. In fairness that's always been the case in northern ireland and you get trained about it in work: its one of those things drummed into you as much as looking both ways when crossing the road but the video angle is just fucking funny. Of course what's going to happen is every time the video is played, someone will make a wisecrack about something or other until a crazy "patriot" or shit scared shop assistant will has the place locked down. From then on, paying for groceries will be like watching your boots and laptop go through the scanners at airport security in silence. I call dibs on renaming it WOOO-Mart!

Still, its a good excuse for shoplifting:
As the police catch up with someone running through the carpark "Holy fuck, officer thank god you're here, this HD TV box was ticking, I'm trying to get it in my van to drive it out of harms way!"
"But your honour I was so afraid of looking like a terrorist I had to make doubly sure people didn't think I was leaving things in the store so I took extra stuff."
"The guy in front of me looked like an A-rab and I wanted to shield myself from any blast and THAT is why I had meat products stuffed down my pants."

Orwellian indeed.

While recently driving thru Nevada I heard something on (commercial) radio which was an audial version of this. It was absolutely chilling. It came on as a typical PSA and I don't even remember if the voice was male or female. Didn't matter; it had that unctious smarmy tone of such announcedments. It started by wishing all listeners (of all faiths; no crude bigotry here) Happy Holidays and proceeded to smoothly invoke The Fear and remind all that should they hear anything suspicious, out-of-line, they should get in touch with Your Friendly Homeland Security. Certain occupations like maids and cabbies, the reassuring Voice went on, have a particular opportunity to be exposed to (and report same, was the strong implication) such Ominous things. It wrapped up with a We're-in-this-together final vague reminder of The Threat and a last happy holidays.

I about had to pull over to be sure I had really heard what I did. I did. 1984? Yes, and all the more insidious for not having the snarling crudity of 20th century despotisms. Guevara once said ours was the toughest struggle, here in the beast's belly.I think so.

Being half-Indian and half-Italian, I look very Middle Eastern and I'm just waiting for the day when someone reports me.

As soon as everyone on the train hears "this is an important message from the New York City Police Department" they realize it's not anything important (like routing changes) at all and stop paying attention. :thumbup1:

I had to look it up to know what you were talking about, and umm...yeah, that takes the cake.

For our US users, don't worry. Britain easily topped us on creepy, disturbing Orwellian measures that border on self-parody for their stunning lack of subtlety. read this:

I don't think it's very orwellian, honestly.

Also I fail to find the significance of telling people to keep a sharp eye at wal-mart.

Something must be up, or the DHS is just trolling.
