A Roma in deportation custody attempted to hang himself in Hamburg. He was arrested on the anniversary of his father’s suicide, who burned himself 2002 in the town hall of Syke fearing deportation.

A 22-year-old, Serbian Roma in custody pending deportation attempted killing himself last Thursday at JVA Billwerder, Hamburg. Miroslaw Redepovic tried using his shoe laces to hang himself in his cell, in fear of deportation. He attempted cutting himself with razor blades before, according to his lawyer Enno Jäger.

A speaker of Hamburg’s department of justice confirmed that Redepovic was found , “still breathing” around twelve. At first he was taken to a special cell for observation. He was transferred to Ochsenzoll hospital’s psychiatric department, where he is being treated with drugs since.

The story is especially tragic as Miroslaw’s father, Milos Redepovic, burned himself 2002 – also in fear of deportation. The then 34-year-old Roma drenched himself in fuel in the lobby of Syke’s town hall and set himself ablaze. He died one day later on November 16th. His family’s application for asylum had been denied. They came to Germany in 1995. Redepovic left a wife Ljalje and 5 children, the oldest of which was the then 14-years-old Miroslaw.

In an official statement, Syke’s mayor blamed the father for the family’s fate. Two years later the family was deported to Serbia, as ruled by Lower Saxony’s ministry of interioragainst all protests. Widow Ljalje was quickly struck by cancer and doctors found two new tumors in 2010.

Her son Miroslaw attempted to re-enter Germany on his own in October. He found shelter at his aunt’s place in Hamburg. Shortly after, on the 8th anniversary of his fathers dead, police picked him up.

Redepovic was arrested and filed an application for asylum. “It was immediately refused”, his lawyer Jäger reports. He now wants to file a suit against the refusal.

But first the district court first decides whether Redepovic has to stay in custody. The aliens registration authority originally requested custody until today. “It is very possible that he thought he would be deported today – and because of that tried to kill himself”, says Jäger.

This is the third attempted suicide in Hamburg’s deportation cells within one year!

Did this get any mention on German television?

Not that I'd know. Maybe on regional TV, but usually asylum/migration issues don't really get mentioned.
