Marx called for common ownership. I'm having issues understand what that means. Can someone explain what common ownership is. And before you tell me to do my own research, I did.

Ownership is a legal concept. It has to do with what is legitimate or permitted or enforceable in regard to the owned things (which can be very abstract, such as a pattern of sound in a song). Within capitalism, ownership is actually a package of rights. Here are some rights it includes:

1. right to sell to anyone they choose at whatever price they can get
2. right to manage people who use the owned equipment (or hire people to manage them)
3. right to create a complex managerial regime to run owned property and activities using it
4. right to rent out use of the property to someone else
5. right to split up ownership into chunks via partnership or stock companies
6. right to loan out assets and charge a fee (interest) for their use
7. right to the revenue from use of the property (such as the revenue stream of a firm they own), thus capturing the fruits of the labor of those employed to do the production of the commodities that are sold.

These rights can be separated.

so when we talk about social or common ownership, it's a question of specifying what rights the social collectivity would have over the property. state socialism historically tended to understand social ownership as analogous to capitalist ownership, and thus implying the legal right of the state to impose a managerial hierarchy over the workers.

but the "ownership" of the means of production by society or the community need not imply this. there could be certain ways in which workers have to be accountable to the society in their use of the property. also, social ownership should mean that the right to dispose of, or transfer control of, the property would rest with the society, that is, the social collectivity.
