greetings from the occupation. A quick update is that we will be staying the night and building for the Glasgow and Edinburgh Day X events tomorrow. We have secured freedom of access in and out of the theatre, and are currently holding workshops and more planning meetings. So far we have been visited by lecturers and trade unionists as well as the press.

Again, for better updates join the Facebook group - all messages of support welcome!

en visiHere are some suggestions: tactics used in student occupations in the USA during the Sixties:

- Try, as much as possible, to get people who are not students to come visit you during the occupation, including union people, local residents. If you can snag a celebrity, like a folk singer or two, all the better.

- Hold a "free school." Hold classes on various subjects: history of freedom; democracy and education; schools should belong to the people, etc. Invite nonstudents in to the classes. Get them to participate. Get them to teach.

- Challenge every public statement of the authorities. They will tell ubelievable lies about violence, destruction of property. They will try to undermine you by questioning your motives and your class origins (just a bunch of rich kids who don't want to go to class).

- Widen the struggle. Try to get union workers not to cross picket lines.

- Widen the struggle. Draw the political conclusions about the economic crisis, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Do not narrow your politics to attract interest or support.

- From us back then, to you now: TAKE UP THE TORCH. SOLIDARITY FOREVER!

Hi all,

Glasgow occupation is still gonig until our breakup tomorrow morning - it is a symbolic occupation which will finish with a rally of all students and workers in the city centre at noon, beofre we march on Parliament in Edinburgh later. Thankfully, we have been able to broaden the struggle to address public service cuts and the wider economic crisis. Speakers who joined the occupation today included lecturers from Drama/Theatre Studies/Sociology and Anthropology/Modern Languages/Adult Education/English Literature and others; and we have had speakers from the University and Colleges Union and the President of the National Union of Journalists. We have also received solidarity messages from UNISON, nationally and at branch structure, and colleges and universities across Europe.

OUR PRELIMINARY DEMANDS:

Occupation

1.

Freedom of access.
2.

No disciplinary action or victimization against occupiers.
3.

Access to basic human rights, heat, light, water, sanitation, food
4.

To appoint our own security team in liason with security.

No police on campus.
5.

Press access on our own terms.
6.

No closing of departments or courses.

Democratic decision-making within the university.
7.

We will respect the spaces of colleagues.

Educational

8.

No privatization of our university, or any universities.
9.

No businessmen on the Senate.
10.

Support for students victimized by the police.

National

11.

A statement of active lobbying for completely free education, education from tax, not personal contribution.
12.

The the Universtiy provides a forum for discussing and fighting the logic of cuts.
13.

That the University acts on behalf of students and staff, not as their unelected managers.

We have issued press releases and been fielding media enquiries with much of the press.

I believe there's currently 23 occupations in Britain right now.
Is that just ongoing ones or does it include ones that have finished/been evicted?
