I wear clothes that I find pretty. Plus there is always the appeal of mystery.

I wear clothes to look good. And on occasion to stay warm.

In the winter (a season I define, because I can't cope with the cold to any degree, as any time that isn't summer) I wear clothes to keep warm. In summer I wear them out of habit.

1. For warmth, protection and decoration.
2. Because men who held women as their own property wanted to limit the sight of "their women" to themselves.
"I can see clothes of silk, if materials that do not hide the body, nor even one's decency, can be called clothes… Wretched flocks of maids labour so that the adulteress may be visible through her thin dress, so that her husband has no more acquaintance than any outsider or foreigner with his wife's body" - Seneca the Younger (c.3 BCE–65) Declamations Vol. I.
"And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms (jaybs), and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful" - Qur'an Sura Nur Chapter: The Light. Verse 31
"I interviewed a young anthropologist working with women in Mali, in a country in Africa where women go around with bare breasts. They're always feeding their babies. And when she told them that in our culture men are fascinated with breasts there was an instant of shock. The women burst out laughing. They laughed so hard, they fell on the floor. They said, 'You mean, men act like babies?'" - Carolyn Latteier, Breasts, the women's perspective on an American obsession

The sight of most people naked would probably kill sexual desire for me, not instigate it.

Yes, because full time orgies are going on at all the nude beaches and parks in the world.

I wear clothes for warmth and comfort. There is something to be said for being naked, but I wouldn't want to inflict that on the general population. Plus, the vast majority of people, I would not want to see without clothes on.

Like kayl I wouldn't really want to inflict my naked form on the world around me but I don't really mind if others do. I'm usually a little unsettled at first when I see people naked but that's just because casual nudity is a little out of the ordinary for me but as NHIA that feeling of being unsettled is no reason not to allow people to be naked.

Practicality and aesthetics. Of course, there are other factors like societal norms and cultural identification, but those are the basic reasons.
Clothes can be a lot sexier than skin. There's the matter of what you conceal and what you reveal, of course, and how you do it, but there's also the sensuality of form and color and texture and pattern.

They would. Some people on this site associate fashion as a whole with consumerism. Unfortunately they are largely tied together. Makes me sad I can't afford nice clothes. :(

I dunno, I just think the idea of expressing your personality through the things you buy and wear is stupid. Especially when fashion is dictated by some rich guys who say your last year clothes are so last year and you need new ones. Among other things...

MMm I mean I guess it could be tied together when someone is overly into fashion, but couldn't it just be considered an evolved way to attract the opposite sex? Fashion doesn't necessarily need to be tied in with expensive brands or even brands in general. Fashion could be considered in very basic terms just the way a person looks, for example your hair.
I wouldn't be surprised if most people who think that way are the ones who are in dire need of a lil flare in their clothes. But anywho, clothes don't need to be expensive. I stick to flea market clothes that look pretty good and buy a couple of levis that would last me the year.

Through extensive research and experimentation, during which I have gathered quite a collection of empirical evidence, I feel compelled to conclude that I have more luck spreading my political message when not subjecting my converts-to-be to a blast of my pasty, full-frontal glory. I also found it difficult to be taken serious when dressed in my preferred attire of blue denim overalls and a jester hat. Therefore, I am compelled not only to dress myself, but to do so within the standards that appear to be accepted in the society that I find myself in.
Hope that answers your question.

1. It's usually fucking cold where I live so I wear clothes in order to avoid the phenomenon whereby my testicles do their level best to rise back into my body in a most painful fashion.
2. Going around outside naked is cause for comment among the general public, and I can't have that.
3. People tend to act oddly when I answer the door in the buff*. I have no idea why.
4. I like to have some kind of buffer between me and a panful of spitting bacon.
5. It's easier to hide erections. People can get the wrong idea otherwise.
*Unless it's expected, and on a couple of occasions it has been.

I wonder how common is social nudity in different cultures? I've always seen it as healthy and normal, an important social bonding experience at the public bath or hot spring. It's known as hadaka no tsukiai, naked companionship. It's restricted to very specific situations, though.

One time my couple of weeks old girlfriend got awkward while she was visiting our family gathering, and my god-father started to change clothes right in front of her. :D The funny part is that I didn't even get why to get embarassed before she said it straight to my face! Social nudity is not only a matter of culture, but a matter of upbringing and peer groups also.

clothing is part of how we identify ourselves. also it has utilitarian uses, but it shows how and who we belong with.
