another fucking cheery thread for you all
commies / anarchos are supossed to believe that human beings are capable of great empathy and intelligence and it is due to the capitalist environment that we often fail to realise this.
i like to hope this is true but then someone says "the only way is voting labour" and i begin to wonder
what do y'all think?

I think human beings have done a lot worse things than vote for the labour party.

Humans will be stupid until the causes of the stupidity are removed.
Voting doesn't change anything.

I seriously don't think stupidity will ever go away. We will always have dumb people, but when times get bad I think they will see who has got their back.

To make a non-serious discussion a bit more serious, I'm actually convinced that medical and technological progress will take care of what we call stupidity quite soon. For example, people with ADHD and some other neuropsychiatric issues were traditionally seen as 'stupid', but now it's been realised that it's not really about intelligence, but merely a condition that can be cured by a simple central stimulant medication.
Also, in a generation or two, genetic engineering and perhaps also cybernetics can probably fix the inequality of actual differences in intelligence as well. Then there is the problem that these advantages won't be available for all as long as capitalism exists, but that'll just one more reason to overthrow it. ;)
But to a large part intelligence is about stimulation and education during growth, and that's something that also will be fixed in a communist system. So yes, faith in the human species is central for our ideal, just not under capitalism and under the present technological level.
PS. The main reason I made this post was to see if the time zone setting for revleft I just set are working.

That's a good point. Technological advancement will allow us to treat conditions and, through modification, eliminate them entirely.

Are you aware of what a lot of those medications have done?

I have a lot of hope for people, but whether I think I'll see it is a matter of time and place. I can be very pessimistic about people, and often am, but at the same time I see that person as being able to great things if they're given the right things to accomplish a task. As of now, they're given junk tools, and hardly any instructions on how to do this or that.

No, I'm just talking out of my ass.
Yeah, these treatments are still new and far from perfect. I have personally some bad experiences of SSRI (anti-depressants), for example. Now of course that's not about perfomance in the same way, but a medical treatment of the brain none the less.
However, a lot of people with ADHD have told me how much their lives have improved after they were diagnosed and treated with central stimulants. It's incredible, really.
I (and others) strongly suspect that I have this particular condition, and will be tested for it in due time. The line of people waiting is long though. :(

Well, I don't think we mean stupidity, but really just lack of knowledge, lack of awareness, and not having the ability to care whether something horrible is going on.
Kids in my school would poke fun at the holocaust, laughing at all of the Jews dieing, yet scream, bash and become serious at anyone making fun of 9/11.

Okay, serious request: Define stupidity.Stupidity is one of those words that no matter how you define it, the connotations are many.
A classic example would be who is stupider? A wise, but un-educated person, or a well-educated person with no common sense?
Personally, I try not to use the term, but to me stupidity is more of a mass hysteria then mental shortfall.
You might observe somebody with an IQ of 90 and never realize they were below average IQ, or observe somebody with an IQ of 110, and say "damn, punching out that window was the stupidest thing I've ever seen."
I feel that "stupidity" is advocated and rewarded in our culture; I've known smart people who keep their intellect on the down-low. Nobody likes a smart-ass, and a well-liked person does better in present society then a genius pariah.
I suggest anybody interested in understanding "stupidity" better to watch this documentary:
