View Full Version : my rant about X-mas.

I came to realize that x-mas in the western world is something that is utterly pathetic and inhumane.

for 11 month, nobody talk about doing something for the poor or those who suffer from economic harship, family of single parent and lonely elderly people, and at the begining of december, until the begining of the new year, Organisations, buisness and citizen give shitload of food and ressources for those people.

People donate food and money, 1 month a year for those people, and the rest of the year, they are left to rot in their harship and problems.

From one side, the buisness get good publicity by showing their goodwill to help the poor and the destitute, and for the avearge joe, its a way to feel less guilty about his apathy toward the current social and economical problem.

This is sickening.

It's not like that here at all, it's just that US commercialisation of Christmas is making people feel guilty all over the place.

Would you rather they did nothing at Christmas though?

i would like that something would be done to stop the people from being poor and destitute, this little 1 month exercise dosnt do jack shit at all to fix the root of the fucking problem.

Me and my family received food aid during xmas and believe me, it dosnt do jack shit to fix any problem we had.

We where in dire need of psychologists, we where in dire need of a rewarding job to feed us all, we where in dire need of assistance from the community on a regular basis.

The rest of the year, we didnt had much help beside that welfare check and 1 or 2 junk stuff some of our neighbor gave us so they wouldnt feel bad by throwing it in the gardbage can.

I'm sorry for your situation, that's a sad story.

But I think it's also a case of no one would do fuck all most of the time, but at Christmas people are supposed to at least think about others.. it would be nice if this was like so all the time, but it isn't- Nevertheless you can't hate the people who try do something....

I don't celebrate Christmas, when I was a child my mum used to buy me and my sister presents just because it was the "done thing", but for about the last ten years or so Christmas has basically been just another bank holiday. Every year on Christmas day me and my girlfriend go for a bike ride around town because there is very little traffic and we can ride like maniacs, that coupled with the good cartoons they show on TV, is the only thing I like about Christmas. People often complain, asking where my Christmas spirit is, I usually reply by asking where their human spirit is, then lecture them about the injustices that plague the world all year round yet they can only bring themselves to care during the month of December. The thing is I don't actually mind people celebrating it, I just hate society expecting me to buy things for everyone, give a bunch of money to charity, and spend time with my loved ones. It's as if it's become okay to not do these things as long as you do them once a year, on Christmas.

X-mas itself isnt a bad event, its a great moment to get in touch with family and relatives, and at some extent your community, its have its use at some extent.

Its the masses of hypocrites and exploiter that is sickening, and the way our society use it to diminish its feeling of guilt toward the ineffiency of our economic system and our governement.

Not when you don't have family and relatives ;) double that with the greed, tradition and the wave of total ignorance that overwhelms society at this time of year.

Christmas is a good excuse to get wasted and hook up

I like x-mas too.

I had a very "storybook" childhood insofar as Christmas was concerned. The kind of Christmas that featured my parents and I getting a tree (a real tree from the forest, not a fake one), decorating it, putting presents under it etc.

I like Christmas, too. It's like anything else in life--you filter out the bad and keep the good and enjoy life to its fullest.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I have mixed feelings about x-mas.

I hate how x-mas takes up a little more of the year every year. When I was little, we had halloween, then turkey day, then x-mas. It was one holiday at a time.

Slowly, but surely, Thanksgiving has been consumed by the voracious monster that is Christmas; now there's slutty costumes and candy, then x-mas-ness. Thanksgiving is like intermission.

I also have a negative personal history associated with x-mas; I lost my ex between x-mas and new years.

Either Christmas is associated with excessive commercialism, or religious fundamentalism, or both.

I like the pretty lights, though.

Apathy exists at all points in the year, and its really terrible. Christmas is commercialized, and its pretty bad, but this is a subset of the whole year. If anything the current state of Christmas is symbolic of the current economic state, so getting angry about it forgets the fact that the year is the same thing the whole way through.

But I'm sorry to hear your story Manic. Best of luck to you.

It's supposed to celebrate the birth of Jesus. That's it. Plenty of people enjoy Christmas singing songs about that with friends and family. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd hate to be a parent with just enough money for a TV and not enough to buy all the crap that my kids were being tempted with.

Robert
5th December 2010, 22:25
Manic, can't you get together with like minded friends and have your own party celebrating anti-commercialism?

Get some wine and a radio and you're on your way. Well, it's better than being pissed off I think.

Some people will have it much worse than I will, suicide rates sore during the Christmas period.

It's supposed to celebrate the birth of Jesus. That's it.Jesus, Saturn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturnalia), whatever.

In any case, I don't have a problem with a (secular) winter solstice holiday. I kinda like the festivities.

But when you've got the religion crammed down your throat, and the stress of the season, it makes it a bit of a bummer.

I like Thanksgiving much better; all the family without the fuss (until Uncle Joe gets into an argument with Granddad, anyway.)

Well, Its funny beccause most rituals Linked to christmas used to be pagnant rituals.

Personally, my favorite version of X-mas is the one a certain roman emperor set up. Basicly, 1 day per year in December, the Roman empire would suspend all laws, people where free to do almost anything they wanted, that was a pretty neat idea.

To me, xmas is a reason not to work and a reason to meet my family.

I dont care about Jesus anymore.

My point was Halloween goes directly into x-mas. It takes up more of the year, and ruins any novelty it has.

By the time x-mas rolls around, all I can think is "thankfully it's over."

And I hate x-mas music.
