The work of Bruce Cumings, particularly, "North Korea: Another Country" and he has a book that just came out this year called "The Korean War". I haven't read that one but I'm sure that its in depth and good.

Second the recommendation for any book by Bruce Cummings on Korea. He's published The Origins of the Korean War in two volumes. His photo book Korea: the Unknown War from the Thames TV documentary is also good. I.F. Stone's The Hidden History of the Korean War is another book worth reading.
