I see quite a few posts here about good guitar based bands, so I thought why not find out who is seen as the best guitarist by the left? I put a few old favourites and other possible popular choices, and I realise I left many out.

jerry garcia, all the way. not to mention he plays everything else amazingly too.

There are many more I would have liked to put in but I couldn't fit them.
My struggle was betweeen Gilmour and May, ability is debatable, but no matter what anyone says they are the kings of tone, and have written the best pieces ever :P.

What no Django? Is it just electric based? Pete Townsend dispite being an alleged nonce is surely worth a shout along with Jeff Beck. Ahh well gotta be Carlos then as I know Jimmie will walk away with it....

Other, Johnny Greenwood. Impossible to play some of his stuff, but he has the skill of being both catchy and a good melody writer while being experimental.

Angus Young, pure and simple rock n' roll.
Goldfinger

I voted Jimi. I like Tom Morello too, but the music he plays is just so empty and cold.

Arrrgggghhhh I was so not sure if he would get reception. I am a massive Django Reinhardt fan. But didn't know how many people would know him, so I put Harrison instead. But yes, I made it mostly ellectric for that reason, for respect as a guitarist though, he has mine. To play that well and fast on old acoustics with hands like that...
I also thought of Greenwood as well, but would of rather Django.
Angus Young, I don't see him as one of the greats, I guess Page is just more mainstream.

James Hetfield... his riffs are amazing!
Jesse Cook is an amazing guitarist - Technically, he's probably the best I've ever seen. For those who have never heard of him; download some of his stuff. He plays flamenco.
I'm sure I like others, but that's all for now.

Anyone who voted for Tom Morello, should be shot for not knowing a fucking thing about Music, practically all the people in that poll are at a higher level than Morello will ever be. David Gilmour is a fuckin genious, but then again so is May and Jimi, it was a hard decision, but as Dave hadnt got any votes he got mine as a sympathy vote.
Go Pink Floyd!!!! :D :D :D :D     :D :D

I voted for Tom Morello not because he has the best guitar playing ability but because if i had to listen to a whole Cd of one of the guitarist music it would be his. I saw nothing telling me it was the most technically sound player i had to vote for AK.
I would have voted Django(spelling) but didn't want to vote other cause it seemed like a waste.

Angus Young, Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell. Yngwie Malmsteen. Morello just flowers his riffs with dozens of effects. In fact, although i like his music, and audioslave riffs, he rarely even plays powerchords! He just plays single notes half the time, having Timmy C back him up to make the riff sound more "heavy" (or at least, give it a more full feel). For example, listen to Sleep now in the Fire by RATM. The part where the bass stops and the guitar plays its riff alone sounds so... weak. He makes great riffs and knows how to use effects pedals like a master, but he is a far cry from being a great guitarist. A good guitarist, not a great one.
Thayil's vibrato is incredible, Malmsteen is possibly one of the greatest shredders of all time, Cantrell can make excellent riffs and shows his talent his solos, and Angus young is just a guitar god, undisputably.
I was shocked when i saw Rolling Stones "greatest guitarist" top 100 thing showing thayil at number 100, yet Jack White was number 17 or so. Eddie Van Halen was number 70, and malmsteen wasnt even on the list. A crime against music, that list was indeed.

I completly disagree i think it sounds great when the guitar plays alone in Sleep Now in the Fire. And as i said before i like the sound he makes the best not that he is the best guitarist in ability.

Raz- i never said it was bad sounding, i like the riff, but it doesnt sound "full." Its obvious he isnt using powerchords. I mean, Come as you Are is a great riff, but its easy as hell. Just because you can play an easy riff doesnt make you a great guitarist.

I thought only to include Vai because he is slightly better known than Malmsteen. "Faster than the speed of light" is a fantastic song.

7th September 2003, 22:38
I voted Jimi, of course. There may have been guitarists better than him in purely techical ability, the live show, or songwriting, but certainly not in all three. Actually, he probably has the best live show of all time, either way.
My personal feelings on guitar-ship. Virtuosos these days, are a dime a dozen. Innovative guitar playing is so rare that I feel Tom Morello deserves a place on any poll or list such as this. He may not be as "good" as some of the people left out, but his guitar sounds were so fresh and new, Morello certainly must be included.
My top five would look as so:
1. Jimi Hendrix (above)
2. Jimmy Page (great guitarist, brilliant crafter of songs)
3. Mark Knopfler (just a great sound)
4. Pete Townsend (great live show)
5. Kim Thayil/Chris Cornell (Chris wrote it, Kim played it)

Pete Frampton just seems a little gimmicky thats all. Mark Knopfler I am sure I included because after Gilmour and May he is my favourite next to Django. I must have had him as an 11th option and it hasn't included it my vote is for Knopfler now.

Come on you cant compare Toms playing with that of Kut Cobain. Both there riffs sound good but Tom has more: originality and not afraid to be differant and change the style of his riffs. Most of the people in the list dont use powerchords constantly but there music sounds full why is it differant with Tom. And hes the second highest in the poll, thats sayin something.

I'm stuck between two that aren't on this list. One because he's multi-talented, also b/c his composing, writing, and his style always completely moves me is the guitarist/saxophonist in Sade, Stuart Matthewman. The second for me would be Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac because I've seen that he's super talented on the banjo, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar with no pick! Maybe he knows how to play many other instruments well too..i dunno

Yeah you should have included Satriani, he's good but I voted Vai anyway.
I can't believe some people feel that Malmsteen's one of the best shredders of all time. Yes technically he is very good but all he plays is tasteless bollocks, unoriginal, repetitive and hasn't changed in 20 years. All he seems to do is take ideas from Bach string solos over 400 years old with diminished arpeggios and extensive use of harmonic minor, put it on guitar and play the same licks at lightning speed. To add to this he's a fat arrogant bastard.

I chose Tom Morello just becasue for a couple of weeks there hasn't been anything else I've listened to, I love the start to Killing in the name, everytime I hear it, it makes me want to go and kill some Corporate leaders.
PS has anyone seen the DVD of their final concert, I love the bonus footage of the show at NDC, it really brings it home how fucked up the world is, when the police can open fire on a bunch of protestors, CALL THAT DEMOCRACY????

AMEN! Not only that, Wilde is a drunk. Ozzy fired him. How ironic eh?
I threw quite the after gig party for Zakks band Black Label Society ( the name of his band should tell ya something) and Crowbar. He was completely ungrateful for the gesture. Everyone else involved ranted and raved about it! I almost felt like Steve Rubell of studio 54 fame. It was quite an elaborate event!
No more tears was written by Zakk I do believe. Think about the royalties on that song!

You must either be Canadian (it is a law there that you must like all Canadian artists no matter how crappy they are), or smoking crack.
