View Full Version : Wikileaks: Cyber attacks and site taken down?

ComradeMan

Yesterday I read online the site was being cyber-attacked, today on the TV news it's saying the site was down.

Today I read this too:-

British Newspaper: The Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8172916/WikiLeaks-guilty-parties-should-face-death-penalty.html)

I don't think it's the USA doing that. That site is a perfect target for pranksters.

On the other hand Assaid mentioned that he was going after Russia and China next and those guys play a bit harder than the US when they are unhappy about something.

Well China has blocked the site(s).

This is a shit-storm.

The one thing I think is the most disgusting, is that the old revelation about how the laws blocking sites with child pornography were used to target political sites, and not really the child pornography ones at all. So in the name of protecting innocent children, and you know how strongly I feel about that, we manipulate laws- ignore real abuse and target things for political ends.

What also makes me laugh, bitterly, is when this guy was exposing stuff in "third world nations" he was getting awards and things and now, it's turned sour.

The only think I don't support is the fact that careless use of confidential material could indeed put people's lives at risk- people who may have no choice in what they do- that was irresponsible in my opinion.

I agree with that, too. People's lives shouldn't be put in danger. The stuff they published this time is just sneaky spy/deplomacy stuff which really doesn't matter. Though the things they did before--if America WAS committing crimes in Afghanistan that kind of thing should be exposed.

All in all, there is nothing wrong with a more transparent world.

The site itself is still up (as somebody posted on the main boards, at http://213.251.145.96/ :)), it's just the domain name which was removed by...whoever it was who hosted that. Not, they say, because they wanted to silence WikiLeaks or anything like that, just because the sudden attempts everywhere to hack it made their whole network unstable. Rather than let all their domain names go down, they just had to sacrifice that one...

Anyway, somebody, please, tell me...here we're talking about a Private Bradley Manning. Private Bradley Manning. PRIVATE...Bradley Manning. I mean yeah, I know he was involved in intelligence analysis and all that, but really...if these documents were so incredibly classified, do we really think that this fellow, and this fellow alone, would be able to get them and distribute them? Somebody who's only been in the army for a few years, of low rank, all this super-secret information was just there for him to see...or maybe, just maybe, he's more of a scapegoat than anything else...

I still think it was Mossad

I still think it was Mossad

I have been reading books on intelligence agencies for years... grew up during the Cold War. It's all smoke and mirrors with this stuff.

You also have to question how much of those cables and stuff were information or disinformation. This book I am reading at the moment, the Mitrokhin Archive is excellent- it really does show how this stuff goes from the sublime to the ridiculous and the bizarre stuff is really, really, bizarre.

But hey, I guarantee you some of the hackers were americans, and I'm willing to bet they might be a little pissed off when lives are at stake and shit. Granted, there have been quite a bit of atrocities committed by all sides, and I definitely think some of the troops are rapist, xenophobic, puppy-kickers who need to be put on trial and locked up for a very long time, who knows maybe I'll be the one to bring 'em to trial if nobody else has the balls to step up to the plate.

I'd really love to actually get to sit in and watch Silvio and his PR man having a conversation...

PR man: But Silvio, this newspaper suggests you gave a 21 year old woman loads of cannabis and then had sex with her, how will you respond?!
Silvio: Pfft, it's all lies...she was 19, and her sister was 17, and it was cocaine. Oh yeah, let's get funky...can you bring me another diamond necklace to give to this stripper?
PR man: ...right away, sir...

Anyway, maybe Israel could have become the darling of the left if it hadn't only been me who mentioned this. To explain why it's not the hot topic amongst those others who are happy to mention anything the Israeli government ever says about anything or ever gets accused of, here's some leftist maths:

WikiLeaks = good
Israel = bad

HOWEVER, as Israel either supports or likes WikiLeaks, working on all that enemy of my friend is my enemy etc. stuff, EITHER WikiLeaks = bad OR Israel = good. As this would lead to a contradiction, it's better to just totally ignore the whole thing, and instead just concentrate on how great it is that fires kill people

Well, Assange is an outspoke cappie. I'm sure some anti-Israel reasoning can be constructed around this.

True, I think he's a bit of a c*nt...don't know why he feels the need to attach his name and face to it all, except for in the endless quest for personal glory...

Personal glory? Even if that was his real intention, and he was lying about the 'lightning rod' role, he very much plays the latter anyhow.

I'd hate to see a soldier die. But if he didn't want to be put in danger he shouldn't have signed up.

BTW: my best friend, ever, in my life, closer to me than family, is a US Marine right now in afghanistan (was in Pakistan for some relief stuff for a while, spent a term in Iraq), and that holds up for him as well. And I would have to say he would agree with me.

COnsidering the US was the most embarrased by wikileaks and they have plans to attack US banks, I would'nt be supprised if it was the US, trying to take it down, lookt at the history of the US, its not far fetched at all, on the contrary, its likely.

Of course we are assuming that Wikileaks itself is not a sham designed to subsequently justify stringent vetting of the internet and curtail person freedoms even more.

Beacuse they don't want any more info commning out, and god forbit wikileaks spills the banks dirt.

But the US IS attacking wikileaks, by presuring domains to drop them (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/03/wikileaks-online-presence_n_791699.html).

Also this rape charge, read about it, its obviously a sham, the origional case was dropped by the judge as rediculous but then picked up again after this came out by a "higher authority," but when you read about it, you see why the origional judge ignored it, its him having sex a condom braking and him not pulling out fast enough, I'll bet anything people are getting paid off for that charge to come up again just now.

Exactly my point too! As the events progress I am beginning to wonder if this is not all a big, artfully constructed smokescreen designed to enable what I mentioned before about internet censorship etc etc.

Counter-conspiracy theory.

hatzel
4th December 2010, 13:43
Indeed. I mean, some of it's pretty juicy stuff, but I'll assume that, as most diplomacy is probably boring as fuck, there will be a lot of boring as fuck stuff in here, too. You can't expect them to separate the wheat from the chaff and then declare they have 362 documents. Got to keep the thousands of pages of shit stuff in there, for effect. Knowing nobody's going to read it anyway.

I'm not sure this would be needed for internet censorship, though. I mean, I don't see the point in even trying, we all know that's a race that will never be won. If they were to shut down WikiLeaks, we'd just all move over to the next copycat site, and then they'll close that, so another will be made, and so on. Kind of like when everybody decided MySpace was shit and migrated to Facebook, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time until we move on to the next big thing.

Anyway, I did hear that the whole WikiLeaks thing hasn't even made the news in Saudi Arabia. Seems they had a pretty effective censorship system going on long before WikiLeaks reared its ugly head
