I have not been active among the left (or politically, even) for the last few years, and I have a few questions about this Fifth International.

When I last was active, King Gyanendra had just relinquished sovereign power, I associated myself with IMT, and there really wasn't any buzz about a Fifth International, so naturally I was kinda interested when I saw bits here and there.

After scouring this site, wikipedia, google, etc., I haven't really turned much up. . .so,

1. Is there a 5th International, or has there just been talk?

2. If there's anything other then a call for a 5th International, what are the politics and theories?

3. Is this an autonomous international movement, or an international extension of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela?

4. Is there a serious and real effort being put here, or just Chavez blowing off words?

disclaimer: I'm not knocking on Chavez or Venezuela, sorry if it sounds accusing; I am completely out of the loop and oblivious to the most contemporary socialist news

1. Just hot air so far. Chavez announced a conference last year to be taken early this year. This was postponed to later this year because of Venezuelan elections or something. Well, the elections are over, but Chavez hasn't made any moves towards it again so far.

2. There are none.

3. The latter.

4. The latter.

Incidentally, the IMT was the first to put down its weight and uncritically support this Fifth International initiative, back in March already. It was even a cited reason for them to expel their Iranian section, which has been critical of Chavez for his cuddling with Ahmedinejad. Their cheerleading looks to have been a little too early though and a little silly right now.

Pretty much that's all I could dig up. Thanks for the input.
