Football genius Eric Cantona has called on citizens worldwide to withdraw their savings from the banks in a bid to disrupt the financial system. The call has sparked an online protest as European countries usher in austerity measures to reassure financial markets.
"What is the system?" the ex-footballer turned actor asks in a video that has gone viral on the Internet, "It revolves around the banks, the system is built on the power of the banks, so it can be destroyed through the banks.”
Sporting a red turtleneck, Eric Cantona called on citizens to massively withdraw their savings from banks (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xf5bd1_cantona-la-revolution-est-tres-simp_news) in a bid end the “corrupt, criminal” banking system during an interview in October. He says that massively withdrawing money from banks is more efficient than demonstrating in the interview with French newspaper Presse Ocean.
"The three million people in the street, they go to the bank, withdraw their money, and the banks collapse...That's a real threat, there's a real revolution," he said in the video on the web. At the time, french workers were taking to the streets to protests France's pensions reform.
His interview caused a online protest when two activists picked on his call and created the web page www.bankrun2010.com (http://www.bankrun2010.com/). On Facebook, close to 30,000 people said they would attend the event titled “Revolution! Lets withdraw our money from the banks” (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Le-7-Decembre-Journee-Officielle-de-la-Revolution/175764562450471?ref=ts#%21/event.php?eid=101996426533405) on December 7.
"We had the idea before, but no one listened to us, because we're no one," one of the activists told AFP.
"Then we saw that the Cantona video was creating a buzz and the reactions showed that it was something people wanted, so we said we'll launch the event, without knowing what the result would be."
Cantona’s call has raised eyebrows within the French government and financial institutions. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said “Cantona is a fantastic footballer. But I not sure we should follow all his suggestions.”
French banks have refused to comment on the protest.
