Climate Change from Chicago to Cancun:
The Least Responsible are the Most Affected
Community Mural Unveiling
WHAT: Local Artists will unveil a new mural conceptualizing the struggle for environmental justice in Little Village, where community members, climate activists and public health experts have been working together to clean up the local coal-fired power plant, Midwest Generation’s Crawford Generating Station. The unveiling will take place on December 7, a global day of action for Climate Justice happening in conjunction with peoples movements in Cancun during the United Nations climate talks and around the world. The mural utilizes visual vocabulary to make connections between local struggles and the global movement for just and equitable climate solutions.
WHEN: 10am Tuesday, December 7
WHERE: Café Catedral, 2500 S. Christiana in Little Village
WHO: The event is being organized by the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization. Speakers include LVEJO organizers, community artists, community activists and LVEJO youth leaders.
WHY: Community-based networks are leading a global Climate Justice movement to confront the root causes of climate change at home, while defining community priorities and self-determined pathways for a new energy economy. In Little Village, this means cleaning up and retrofitting the coal-fired power plant, and increasing funds for social services, increasing open space and community gardens to increase local food self-sufficiency. The Crawford Generating Station is the greatest cause of air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions in Little Village, and causes a host of health issues such as asthma, respiratory disease and cancer.
Along with thousands of government officials and United Nations staff, Little Village community members are attending the 16th International Conference of the Parties, or COP 16, of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, where the world’s governments are coming together to debate climate solutions. The climate talks will take place from November 29th – 10 December 2010.
