View Full Version : Stupid jokes about "sending to the gulags"

What is it with those on the far-left making crude, often tasteless, 'jokes' - that word is used very tenuously here - about sending people to the gulags, or putting them "up against the wall, when the revolution comes"? Why would someone think that funny? I don't understand. Far too many people make this kind of childish joke on revleft. Hopefully it's confined largely to the internet, though. As a general rule of thumb, it would seem that most people who make this kinda joke are dickheads, although I could be wrong. But, strangely, it seems I have seen a couple anarchist-types making these silly jokes. Anyway, I just had this thought the other day, I thought chit-chat might like it.

Because modern western culture is so heavily saturated with violence that the actual seriousness of such comments is poorly understood.

As the left we are seen, sometimes, as a bunch of nasty Stalinist bastards that wanna put people in the gulags and be done with them. What's the point in being if you can't the piss out of yourself a little bit amongst your 'community' or whatever? Its not like the majority of us actually think gulags are a good idea - any lefty that does is just a parody of his or herself, and any of us that parody the stereotype are merely having a laugh :).

Guilty as charged.

Maybe you should get a sense of humour?

Yes, I went there.

Most of the people that say they'll "send someone to the gulags" are doing it to satirize Stalinists and other similar personality-cultists. It's not treating the subject of gulags as being a light, insignificant issue, it's making a mockery of those pathetic, anachronistic douche bags that support the existence of them.

Although it must be said that leftists generally don't have a sense of humour. Just look at every "leftist jokes", "leftist pick-up lines", etc. thread in this very forum for proof.

That's cause most people on this forum suck ass.

The best pickup line is "if you were a booger I'd pick you first".

Levy, it is clear you will have to sent to a reeducation camp after the revolution. I'm sorry, but we just can't have such counter revolutionary opinions floating around.

There's going to be a movie released soon featuring gulags. It stars Colin Farrell as a dude who has to escape the gulag.

Ummm....My spelling of his name was completely intentional, post-modernism or something. Yeah.

Yeah, I'd rather people not make these kinds of jokes in public - we have an uphill PR battle as it is without some newbie coming on the site and seeing someone make a "gulag" or "shooting squad after the Revolution" joke. I think a lot of the "up against the wall" jokes come from the 1960s-70s... but I don't think all of them were kidding.

Some were. Abbie Hoffman: "Remember kiddies, stay off the hard drugs - the only dope worth shooting is Richard Nixon".

I make these kind of jokes as a parody of the people that make that kind of comment seriously. We must have a different sense of humour.

most of the time it's for polemical reasons. most leftists know that the ruling class will do bad things in its own interest and not care, but when you attach morality to it, it's normally for propaganda aimed at non-lefties. capitalism is bad, mmkay?

You will all be sent to the gulag for perpetuating the false belief that gulags actually existed.

This is exactly what I mean when telling these jokes, but I only tell them to comrades and other people who know that I am never serious with jokes about Stalin and gulags.

I only tell them to comrades because other people probably wouldn't know what I was on about, not because other people would get offended.

This. Most of my peers wouldn't know the difference between a gulag and a kulak.
