Why are they fighting us? Because we're THERE, they don't know about 911, they don't care, AMericans are just in their area and saying they're in charge now, what you expect will happen?

Good post but I seriously question how the poll was conducted. Given the brutal nature of US occupation and the habitual rounding up of men for illegal detainment and questioning I think most people would say 'I have no idea why the americans are here' and 'I don't know what 9/11 is' because I don't want to become a suspect.

It's also a weighted question- 'do you know why the americans are here?' can mean here in your country or more specifically why the last patrol or outpost came through or was established. The questions are too similar to what the patrols would be asking .

I think that's a bit ridiculous of a figure but I'd be comfortable saying 50% of Americans are in the dark about every peripheral aspect of both wars or 'the war on terror'.

It VERY MUCH IS THE TOPIC. You are saying that 92% of Afghans are cluless and I'm AGREEING with you and saying that most people are clueless.

My point was, that the reason Afhanis are fighting us, is because we are there, and that it has nothing to do with defending al queda or the taliban, they just want to be left alone, they had NOTHING to do with 911, they don't even know about it. The US does'nt have any buisiness being there.

Are the Afghanis fighting us? I don't think so. Some are, but they are Taliban and lots of those people are Packastani. You need to get the statistics on the number of Afghani TALIBAN that are fighting us that have heard of 9/11.

I think that would make more sense.

Otherwise my post about who knows what about their belief system is a more interesting point.

It's a poetic device--what I was ACTUALLY saying is that we should find these guys and punish them. But by using metaphor--I caught the feeling of the idea, and portrayed it in a few words as possible yet giving it a full emotional force.

I don't really understand the methodology behind he figure of 92% not knowing about 9/11. I just can't believe that this is true unless I see a more detailed account of how they came up with this figure.

In addition, I don't really understand the logic being thrown at me. I mean...if the Afghans did know about 9/11, would that be why they'd fight the Americans? Or what's the meaning of linking knowledge of 9/11 with fighting the Americans, as Gacky seems to be suggesting? Unless I'm misunderstanding...

If anything, widespread knowledge of 9/11 would probably decrease the numbers of Afghans fighting the Americans, rather than increase. On the back of some kind of 'oh, so they're here to fight the people who did that, not to fight me...' idea. Because I've never known any group of people who would be more likely to fight any group because that second group happened to suffer a terrorist attack or some other hardship :confused:

Or maybe I'm wrong. Anybody up for invading Haiti? They had an earthquake there, you know, that just makes me want to take up arms against them...

Thats my point, they don't know aobut 911, so they're fighting us because we are there, just like the Russians were there, to them we are just foreign invadors (which is exactly what we are), not people trying to find those responsible for 911.
