The United Left Alliance was formed yesterday to become the new alternative to the establishment capitalist parties; Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour. It is opposed to the IMF bailout, The 4 year "recovery" plan which will mean massive cuts to the standards of living for ordinary working people but with no change to the criminal 12.5%corporation tax and no increase on taxes of the wealthy.
The ULA consists so far of The Socialist Party, The People before profit Alliance(SWP & others), The South Tipperary Workers action group, and other independants such as the Former Labour TD now independant socialist Declan Bree.
It expects to field 20 candidates (the highest ever in ireland) in the upcoming general election as a means of establishing itself in the field of Irish politics and becoming a new alternative.

Huh, I thought the Irish SP and SWP hated each other extra hard after their abortive attempts at a collaboration in the '90s. I remember the CWI even had a pamphlet that basically pinned quite a lot of blame on the Cliffites. Is there any reason to believe that the basic working patterns of the CWI and IST won't sabotage this attempt? I'm not trying to come off as cynical, I just know the reputation of both groups and am genuinely curious if there are other forces that can hold things together despite the fact that the CWI and IST have proven to be like oil and water in practice.

Yes, and if they do get power, all they'll do is whine about how Stalin cheated!
One legislation proposal would be one saying "1. Stalin a *****.". It'd be called Anti-Stalin law 2011

In relation to the differences between the Socialist Party and the SWP - yes they do exist - there is nothing wrong with having political differences. The ULA is an electoral alliance for the upcoming general election in Ireland. It may or may not have a future after the election and its future will largely depend on the support it generates - both in terms of votes but, more importantly, in terms of active supporters. The Socialist Party and the SWP have, with others, agreed a programme for the ULA. Yes it is a reformist programme - but the Irish working class aren't remotely close to drawing revolutionary conclusions at this point. How the ULA will develop no one can predict - only time will tell - in the meantime all the component parts are working in a fraternal relationship to maximise the impact of the ULA.

Will this organisation attempt to take a clear position on British Imperialism in Ireland, and if so, what will this position be? Does it intend to co-operate with emerging groups such as éirígí?

The way Cowen's acting so stupidly isn't funny. Things could just end up worse. Communism'd do us some good.
