View Full Version : Music with Grit by Women
¿Que?
26th November 2010, 01:56
Let's not think too genre specific on this one. I don't just mean various strains of metal, although that's perfectly acceptable. Metal being but one of the two most grittiest genres ever conceived by humans. The other, of course, is hip hop.
In any case, I would like to hear music that exudes power, domination, control, fear, that warrior like spirit that our society so typically associates with men and masculinism. But I'd like to hear it done by women.
If you're going to half-ass this post with something marginally impressive, please don't post. I'm looking for the cream of the crop, the best of the best. Just cuz it's got grit and it features a woman artist don't make it good, and it's not exactly what I'm looking for. Necessary, but insufficient condition. Make sure the music is good.
Thanks in advance.

I think you may have misread "grit" as "shit".

Arch Enemy is probably as grittiest as it gets with women vocals.

Nausea have a female singer and they're wicked gritty. Problem is, despite them being a great band, she's probably the worst aspect of them. Her voice is really irritating.
Spitboy are a good band with female vocals and feminist lyrics. Antischism also.

Good stuff people, let's keep it going.
This is some Louisiana rap from the 90's. I remember first hearing her in Master P's "Make Them Say Uh" where she's got a verse among like five other male rappers. In this song, which I just now learnt of, she only raps in the first verse, but it's a pretty mean sounding beat, and her vocals suggest to me a person not to be fucked with.
As far as content, I really can't say, as I'm not too familiar with her stuff, but it seems the usual drug dealin', murdering ghetto stuff, only sans the womanizing. Actually the song "Unlady Like" I heard a short clip of, sort of implies some manizing, even. Unfortunately, it also sort of reinforces certain gender stereotypes such as that a woman has to rely on a man for money, and just general materialist values, and other stuff. It's not a complete inversion of the tough guy, male gansta, but it certainly was groundbreaking in its time.

I'm not a fan of either of these bands. I'm still waiting for a band to be created that has the energy and talent of Rage Against The Machine but with a female lead vocalist.

Memphis Minnie was awesome cause she was one of the few (actually, only that I know of) woman country blues musicians that sang and played guitar (really well).
