View Full Version : reputation/Rep power whats the point?

Sorry for the dumb question, but is there any point to the reputation system on this board other than as a sort of a popularity contest?

It is the measuring stick revlefters use to compare their e-penises.
But otherwise, no.

You can negrep stupid posters and watch them go apeshit.

this, you can disable rep in your settings, then you just get 1 grey block

It allows those who disagree with/do not like you to go one more than type their complaint in capitals or use expletives.

Its purpose is essentially to indicate that a given poster has made quality posts in the past, and therefore may be worth turning to for advice, etc, for a newbie, as well as being more reliable. Of course, from this it undergoes a dialectical inversion to be essentially proportional to the amount of one-line posts which a a poster has made.

^^^In some ways you are right, but in my experience, many rep points are awarded sub-standard posts simply because they defend a certain viewpoint -- and not very well, either.
A few months back, 'Red Cat', for example, awarded them like confetti to anyone who disagreed with me, no matter how poor their posts were. The same is true more recently of 'S Artesian', 'Greymouser' and 'Freedom Hating Communist'. For such comrades, rep points are the equivalent of a "Here! Here!" or an "Up Yours Rosa!"

I don't know if it makes you feel any better, but people basically do this to each other all the time, and it's not just you.

Yeah, why do we have a rep system if we want an egalitarian society anyways?
KC

Because some people are more equal than others and thus deserve more rep

One day, it was decided that there were far too few one-liners and sectarian circle-jerks on this board. In order to correct this the rep system was implemented. It comes with a convenient thank you button so that you can easily show that you approve of x user comparing y tendency unfavorably to their genitalia.

In fact, I have no feelings either way on this; I was just reporting a viewpoint -- but thanks anyway.:)

I mostly use it to make sure that some other posters find what I'm putting up here worthwhile. It's nice in that regard.

Mystics? I assume they inhale noxious gases and fail about on the floor whilst telling the future, yes? If not I will be sorely disappointed.

Thanking a post cleans up the thread from 'I agree with that' and other such one liners, I assume. The point for a score is beyond me.

My e-peen brings all the boys to the yard, cos, damn-right, my dialectal analysis is better than yours
anyway, I never really saw the point in it. So, partly because I don't get enough of it, but mostly because it seems slightly superfluous - and can in fact have a negative effect where post are full of witty one-liners that beg, "rep me, notice me, please!" - I don't show my rep-power, I prefer the little grey square.

I've taken rep from a Nazi, a capitalist and some ass-gasket Stalinist calling for the extermination of anarchists and trots and "Red Cat" took rep from me for taking rep from Stalin's steroid taking ghost. (I think the Stalinist was a troll?):)
I think it's a good system to keep these people from "success".
http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Forum_Trolling#RevLeft
Can a troll succeed? What's their definition of success? I would think if your life consists of making up fake online persona's based in psychopathy you pretty much preemptively fail. What's more weird? People wanting to change the economic system with human liberty as the goal or little zit faced pricks making fun of people who actually have the ability to see the system for what it is?

Ooh, never been infracted before! Wonder if it will give me that exhilarating "I just did something naughty" feeling.
But admins, don't close the thread quite yet, I must run out and buy balloons and a party hat to celebrate this occasion properly.
And so there is no confusing me with an asshole making sarcastic post in a members forum thread, and thus not getting my well deserved infraction- Let me say that I am indeed seeking rep, as my pathetically needy ego demands it.
That is all, Toodles.

It was not a sarcastic post. "Rep parties" are one of the more stupid things featured on Revleft.
If you don't mind, you may take back your Thanks.
