Let's say you finish a certain task perfectly, but you keep checking and rechecking it until you almost go mad. But you can't help it because you want it to be utterly perfect and even one mistake will ruin the day for you.

Is this a neurological disorder or just a psychological problem? Call it OCD or whatever, but what exactly is happening to the person concerned? Is it genetic or is it 'all in the mind', as some would say? What if one of the parents has the same problem?

If it causes emotional distress to the extent, that it cannot be avoided in general instances it would be OCD. As far as causes go, they are stipulated at the moment.

I think that OCD is a psychological condition, although I'm no psychologist. The obsessive thoughts that I get are linked to other mental health problems that I have, so in my case I would say that genetics probably didn't play a huge role (although I wouldn't rule out a genetic predisposition). Illnesses such as OCD often run in the family, although that could be either genetics or due to growing up in an environment where OCD tendencies are "normal". I've had a quick look through the leaflet the NHS sent me, but it doesn't really have a lot of useful information.
