So comrades recently I chose to debate in favor of racial affirmative action. The only problem is that, in my school where blacks and hispanics compose less than 5% of the entire school system. And this is an in-class debate with the majority of the class very concerned with college to the extent that they tend to blame blacks and hispanics for not getting in. Most of them favor getting rid of affirmative action as a whole including class based, sex based, and race based. I have a few arguments against the system of institutionalized racism, and how it makes it more difficult for lower income blacks and hispanics to recieve equal education, but I feel that emotional arguments would go a long way for the opposition, seeing their popular support.

What I have so far is statistics that show that it is more difficult for blacks/hispanics to get work than for their white counterparts and that even with affirmative action they stay underrepresented in universities as well as STEM professions. Also I have a large gap in the amount of money earned, and institutionalized discrimination shown by the excessive amount of blacks and hispanics in jail.

Most students don't care much for discrimination because they believe that its takes opportunities away from them, but they forget that institutionalized racism still exists and use simple "blacks and hispanics are getting all the benefits" examples. Its almost as if everyone has forgotten that racism still exists here. When I chose to defend affirmative action, I was told that I was disgusting, and a racial opportunist.

Please if anyone has good arugments to show that instituionalized racism still exists or statistics to back it up, it would be much appreciated.

Where I am from in California, a proposition was passed to ban affirmative action in the UC system. The whites who had been benefited by affirmative action lost attendance numbers as the percentage of Asians in college shot up.

I suppose that is true, but there has been rabid hatred against affirmative action from all camps that don't receive it. Like the affirmative action bake sales. I agree with your comment though, people hate on affirmative action when they don't receive it and then when getting rid of it doesn't work they complain some more.
