I am working for a Humanitarian Organization which trains people over a six month period and then sends you to Africa. I am going to Africa in March, to Angola :D. Anyway, we get lots of different people from all over the world coming and training as a Development instructor. Many different cultures, many different religions, creeds and colors so it is always exciting to meet and talk to all these people.

Well, I met one such person. An Indian guy who is a Christian. He is married with three children and has an undergraduate and two post graduate degrees, and is doing the DI programme for research for his PhD. This man, is by no means stupid. He is a well educated, articulate and interested in everything. But he told me a story. And he told me, with great passion and excitment. He was absolutly convinced that it is what happened and in fact he believes it so much he changed his entire life to follow his religion.

He says that at the age of 19 when he was awaiting to visit a canteen at his univeristy. He was sat in his room waiting. As he sat thinking a large beam of light fell through the ceiling of his room, which was on the thrid floor of a block of student hostels. And he was pulled into the light where he saw thousands and thousands of people dressed in white cloaks. He said he heard a voice in his ear which was telling him religious scriptures, he said the light carried him back down and he could see his body and he was chattering something, when he came around he was completly wet.

Now, if someone other than this man had told me this, I would have thought 'what a crock of shit'. But this man, so educated, so intelligent and so believable made me wonder a little.

What are peoples explanations for this. What do you think could have happened? And if it was just a lie why would such intelligent people lie in order to bring credibility to their religions?

Even smart people can be afflicted with mental illness, or just be very convincing pathalogical liars.

" Even smart people can be afflicted with mental illness, or just be very convincing pathalogical liars."

That's such a fucking cop out. First off, if he was really mentally disturbed, there would be other signs of it than this. Second, why would he lie ? Why would so many others like him lie ?

I am by no means a Christian, but I believe there are alot of unexplained things in this world and I try to keep my mind open to explanations. Sometimes God seems like a very valid explanation.

Alcahol and other "substances" make you see all sorts of stuff... or a very realistic dream.

The "white light" phenomenon is quite common, as is "hearing voices".

My guess is that he suffered a "mini-stroke" in a portion of his brain...though drugs could have the same effect.

It's been suggested that "great religious prophets" are borderline schizophrenics or epileptics...they can function well enough but are subject to random "attacks" that briefly but severely distort their perceptions of reality.

You could ask him if he thinks everyone is "entitled" to this "divine experience", and, if so, why doesn't everyone experience it? And, if not, what kind of a "God" gives the prize to some and not others and for what reasons?

In terms of evidence, of course, subjective experience--real or imagined--doesn't count.

It's perfectly possible that a sort of consensual consciousness exist in human kind, a la Jung. It could explain why most people have the same near death experience universally, and it could explain most religious experiences.

This experience was likely an internal one, but who knows? There are still a lot of things yet to be explained (which doesn't make then non-scientific).

I think it's great when people share their "religious" experiences.

It sheds light on their state of mind, the extent of their faith and shows us that religion can be interpreted through many ways; the fact that they are so open about it shows how powerful something like religion is and demonstrates how all-consuming it can be.

It's beyond my comprehension why Hindus pierce their bodies during Thaipusam, or how monks can run over embers, but when they explain themselves it's easier to try and see things from their perspective and not think of them as a bunch of mad people; you don't have to believe, just make an effort to understand before you rationalise or condemn anything.

It's entirely up to you as to whether religion actually makes sense, but if you actually take the time to consider and think about these sort of exchanges, then even if you're an atheist, you're one step closer to understanding why, instead of just going on and on about how religion is the opiate of the masses blah, blah, blah. Positively, these situations build tolerance.

I totally believe in "mind over matter" though. The way those Bhuddist monks can dry wet sheets on their backs in sub-zero temperatures is amazing.

But I don't think it has anything to do with a religion.

I think it does have something to do with "faith", how your able to override parts of your mind to do certain "unexplainable" things. This doesn't neccessarilly mean religion is true, but it does mean faith does have some useful side-effects.
