Hey, I've only recently become a socialist, having grown up with the extreme capitalism and conservatism that characterizes the rigid groupthink where I live (Idaho).
I am still exploring my exact political identity, but at this point I would describe myself as a democratic socialist with a revolutionary orientation. So, the work of Rosa Luxemburg has had a big influence on me. So far the Socialist Party USA (SP-USA) seems to be the closest fit for my politics. But I'm definitely open-minded when it comes to other perspectives.
The leftist scene where I live is virtually nonexistent. The Democratic Party is the most leftward organization (ha!) in the area, and about 75% of the population identifies as Republican--usually of the most ardently right-wing caliber. It feels a bit isolated, but that's nothing new.
Anyway, thanks, and I look forward to spending...far too much time on this site! :)

I guess you know this, but Idaho had historically had a labor scene significantly influenced by socialism. In Eugene V. Debs socialist ticket in 1912 saw him getting a strong showing in Idaho- 10% of that state's vote- which was better than he did elsewhere.
Though times change. It's amusing to think that a place like Oklahoma had historically hosted the largest number of registered SPA members and it's as reactionary as one can get.
I hope you enjoy your time here. I think you'll fit right in.

Thanks for the welcomes!
Red Commissar, I didn't realize that about Debs' relative popularity here (I'm kind of...er, young and dumb)--thanks for pointing that out. It is amazing the way things change.
And thanks, Scarlet Ghoul--like your name too :)

Yeah, the old Socialist Party of America had a fair amount of support in areas that we found find somewhat odd today- I think it was partially due to miners and tenant farmers in the Plains and Mountains states. Also, a decent section of the Populist movement decamped to the Socialist Party when the Populists splintered, which helped account for the popularity of the SPA in places like Oklahoma and Kansas. Incidentally, the SP-USA had locals form in both Oklahoma and Kansas in the past few years, so just because you live in Idaho doesn't mean you're alone.
Anyway, welcome. Nothing wrong with being "young and dumb," though I wouldn't think of it like that. We don't age discriminate here, and the Learning section is a great place to ask questions.

That does make sense, I'll try to keep it in mind. Thanks Zeus!
