Few Afghans in Helmand and Kandahar provinces, Taliban strongholds where fighting remains fiercest, know why foreign troops are in Afghanistan, says the "Afghanistan Transition: Missing Variables" report to be released later on Friday.
The report by The International Council on Security and Development (ICOS) policy think-tank showed 92 percent of 1,000 Afghan men surveyed in Helmand and Kandahar know nothing of the hijacked airliner attacks on U.S. targets in 2001.
"The lack of awareness of why we are there contributes to the high levels of negativity toward the NATO military operations and made the job of the Taliban easier," ICOS President Norine MacDonald told Reuters from Washington.

I dont know what i should feel more of.
Appalled at the lack of communications infrastructure and complete parochial society that is Afghanistan or Angry that the US has, unsurprisingly, been punishing all of those who have no clue whatsoever as to why they are being occupied.

They probably say no, just incase they are detained for it, and forced to perform sexual acts on other men, while wide eyed yankee hyeenas laugh and take pictures.
Not being funny, but would you let on you knew what 9/11 was, when so many pashtuns have been framed or killed, then painted as guerrillas.

Well, fact of the matter is that 9/11 wasn't why we are in Afghanistan. It was used as justification, that much we know. 9/11 was taken advantage of by our leaders. It created these wars and created the Patriot Acts.
Though, this also shows why 9/11 really doesn't matter in the long run. Class war will remain even after events such as that of 9/11.

This is not wholly surprising, but it is a bit disappointing that this many Afghans are still this in the dark about events that directly impacted them, even nine years later. I would not have anticipated such a high number as 92%.
Though, I am sure that in the past nine years, most Afghans have had far more pressing matters to attend to than to research the excuses American imperialists gave as justification to invade their land and destroy their homes and families.

Exactly, it makes me laugh when you see these conspiracy theorists like, Bin Ladens name is tim Osman blah blah.
Wether the US government or Osama and his posse of anti armpit shaving nutjobs did it, it just destracts from using the correct class analysis.
By the way TVM, how can you be anti revisionist and support DPRK and Cuba?

Then again, I bet 92% of Americans wouldn't know about the terrorism America inflicts on the the rest of the world even though they have access to all media outlets. It's all relative I guess.

That is surprising. I would have thought something like that would've been passed on by word of mouth at the very least.
But it'd be hard for hawks to continuously push their clash of civilisation nonsense when this comes up.

I'm not anti-revisionist to the extent where I'm going to show opposition against them. I'm going to criticize what's revisionist about them, but I'm not going to recant any support I have over them. Mao wasn't going to recant his support towards the Soviet Union, even when he realized how revisionist Khrushchev was. The feud between China & Russia only progressed after the Soviet Union took back all industrial help & aid in '61.
Other than that, let's keep on the subject shall we?

Probably a result of horrible translators, I think.

If I was in Afghanistan and somebody asked me if I knew anything about a terrorist attack I think I'd probably say no too.

Even if they didn't know about it, it's not really important whether they do or not, because 9/11 simply has nothing to do with them.

This was my thought exactly. It's not like 9/11 was justification for NATO invasion in the first place.
