View Full Version : Co-Option of the Fist Pump

Does anyone here feel that the historical symbol of unity and solidarity, usually by the working class, has been co-opted by those motherfuckers on the jersey shore? I've never actually seen a full episode of the show(thank god), but I have seen clips. I gave the fist pump to a younger coworker (when talking about the boss haha) around a year ago and he said "but you're not italian?!" A lot of people still know the origins of the fist pump, but the younger generation, especially those not involved in a movement, seem a little clueless, or far worse, associate it with that abomination of a show.

Anyone else feel the same way?
Should we abandon it as too contaminated, or should we try to reclaim it?
Anyone else see it as more than a coincidence that during capitalism's biggest crisis in 80 years this show suddenly appears and co-opt our symbol? (ok, I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but still, it strikes me funny)
Any other thoughts?

Lol, fist-pumping is different from a raised fist. Also me and my sister watch the Jersey Shore together every time I visit home. It is bonding time for us. :)

The title of this thread initially scared me.

No, we can ask to borrow their lip gloss for wicks and window writings. They are revolutionary. .

I'm not sure if this is serious or not.

I was being very serious. Maybe the part of the country you live in is different, but I live in close proximity to the fascist police state of new jersey, so the show is rather popular (tells you a lot about the moral wasteland that is "culture" in the US). The unrest in the 60s-70s, and even less so the Spanish civil war, is not taught very much, if at all, in public schools, and so fist pumping is associated more by the younger generation with this stupid show, rather than the protest movement.

Valid point about fist pumping being different than the raised fist, but it's still a little too similar for my liking.

I know the topic may seem silly, but symbols can be very important.

We all live in close proximity to the police state. The solution here is to not raise your fist if it makes you uncomfortable.

Ever been to Florida?

NJ > FL

I really find this whole thread silly...like what did you expect out of the system/spectacle? This shit happens every day. I wish it was different, but it ain't
Even than, there are worst evils out there than Jersey Shore.

This is more or less the same everywhere
Even Spain sugar-coats the civil war, I bet

Yeah, a raised fist and a fist pump are different.

It would be hilarious if Jersey Shore people did the raised fist, and it'd be even more hilarious if radicals did the fist pump.

Hahaha New Jersey is fascist now?

Fist pumping has never been part of the protest movement.

They're just not the same thing.

Fisting has also been co-opted. It used to be a revolutionary thing but now it is done by morally degenerated teen fascists.

I'm not a culture snob. I've never been to an opera. I haven't been to an art museum in around 10 years. I drink Budweiser. I'm not known for my appreciation of the finer things in life.

I just don't think showing a bunch of narcissistic young people getting drunk has any redeeming value. And if you think the redeeming value is "Hey let's watch this show and see how stupid these people are," that's a complete waste of time IMHO.

As for New Jersey, there's a lot of contradictions (some of the social programs are "liberal" compared with the rest of the country), but in general, it has a lot of the qualities of a fascist police state. If you want to argue it on the fascism grounds, you might have a case. But New Jersey IS a police state, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Your lack of interest in the finer things is what has blinded you to the artistic and cultural superiority of the Jersey Shore.

Fisting? Come on man, that's just too easy.

Depends on the tightness or lack thereof.
