The tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.
OK, seriously, books might be a tad too much, try getting them started on magazines like The Economist, Time, Wallpaper, Wired or any other current affairs rags. Alternatively, look for short stories, like Stephen King's The Green Mile, or Roald Dahl's "Taste" and Other Tales.
English isn't officially my mother tongue either, but I found that my vocabulary and comprehension increased after reading these sort of mags. That, and the fact that I spent my childhood in London.

If you want to teach your friend English teach her/him by just speaking in nothing but english. Spanish was my first language and that's pretty much how I learned. Sadly, I speak more English than Spanish now and the Spanish III honors class they pushed me into is already difficult :(

Harry Potter...its really easy and its short
Animal Farm is extremly easy to read.
Charlottes Web is one of my fav.
Rain of Gold is a bit more difficult but its still kinda easy.
And any Goosebumps books, thats what I first started reading
The back of the Ceral Boxes....its all I can think of. Spanish was my first lauguage too, and it still is my main one.
Oh and also what works is watching English movies with Spanish subtitles (thast what we do in italian class)

That must be confusing as hell. What happens then, you have to translate it into Italian after reading all the Spanish and hearing all the English?
But seriously, that is a good idea, and would work well.
Animal Farm and magasines are the suggestions I'd go with. Or tell him to check out Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".
