So we had the National Organization of Marriage (anti-gay marriage group) come to my town. We decided to have a counter-protest around them. Their group: 53 people. Our group: 466. We swarmed them and they had no where to go. Some things to consider: How accepting is your town/city of LGBTQ community? When are they coming? Prepare in advance. Get flyers out everyday you can, and partner with any and all groups willing to. Show those bigots that when they show up in your community, they will not be tolerated.

Make signs that say "God Hates you" with an arrow and then stand next to them and call them names.

They're coming in 4 days so I don't really have enough time to organize myself. However I believe the Student Alliance for Equality is organizing something and of course I will bring the prospect of a counter-protest up at our next SDS meeting. I'm not sure about what organizations at other schools or in the community are doing but I'm guessing there will be a pretty large crowd of counter-protesters, most people in my area are really rather liberal.

Not to demean past counter-protests against them, but I think people should scrap all these polite counter-protests with equality signs and the like, it's exactly what they want. Counter protests to the WBC should be fun and hilarious. Turn their own protests into funny events for their opponents. That would be much more fun, and it would genuinely piss them off as opposed to giving them what they want.

Another good way to face them is to make random funny signs to turn the tables. However, in some communities such as mine, people would want to be more serious since we have a large LGBTQ community and we have so much love and respect for them. Either way, get the news out as much as possible, flyer, facebook, whatever. Just surround em so they see never to come back.

Step 1: Begin with GLBTQ groups, student groups, local organizations, etc... and inform them of what's happening. Let them know of what's going to happen, and how they need to get the word out to the community via already established channels.

Step 2 is to canvas the town with fliers and if you can, ads in a local paper - tell folks that bigotry is being pushed in your town and you won't stand for it. Let them know when to rally and where to meet the WBC. Keep it short and to the point, and give them a link to a local community organization.

Step 3 is to make posters, lots of them. Make them creative and to the point, and when people come to rally, hand them out. Everyone likes something cool and free to wave around in protest.

Step 4 is to plan out your counter-rally. Where you're going to meet, what routes for escape there are if need be. What you'll need, etc... be prepared and be numerous and you'll have a good time.
