View Full Version : Communist/Socialist/Anarchist Inspiration

This may seem a little stupid to you, but i'm just really interested to know who inspired you to become a communist, a socialst or an anarchist. Because of the fact that only ten slots are allowed the options are limited but i thought i put the best spread i could.
The decsision was real tough for me. I would vote Marx because without him there may not have been any of the others but he has no guerilla warfare credencials so it was between Che, Ho and Mao but Mao really fucked up towards the end of his lead.
I choose Ho because his battle was against the home of the evil empire the USA and he did not live long enough to fuck it all up for himself.

well, it really wasn't any of those people that inspired me to become or have a point of view of a communist/socialist/whatever. I mean the people on that list that i have read about have done some great deeds, and im glad and thankful for it. But just because i like these people and what they did isn't the reason i "became" a communist, or like i said before a whatever. What inspired me was the injustice and poverty everywhere, you know? I saw the face of hunger and the results of corruption and exploitation, and that inspired me to change... (hopefully that made some sense)

I suppose it was African leaders in the middle of the 21st Century. Notably Nasser, and Kwame Nkrumah, that led me to look into Socialism.

my mother taught me the ways of communism and the most basic and obvious reasons why capitalism is a faulty and oppressive system. Marx, though, taught me more in depth about communism, he is the reason why I believe so strongly in communism, as opposed to before, when I just called myself a communist, but knew little and had no strong beliefs.
I voted Marx. :marx:

No single person. No single event even. I can't remember the exact time I considered myself a socialist even, it just grew out a detestation of racism and further developed from there after looking at the situations racism creates and what its cause is.

Che Guevara led me to communism, if that's what you were looking for. However, to my current ideology I would have to say Marx, Lenin, and Stalin.

I voted Che. Led me towards the light, communism, I'm not gonna say I strictly follow one one sucka, take a the best from everyone, learn from their mistakes and develop them and so on.
I would have thought anarchists would have been pissed that Goldman isn't on the list...

I voted Lenin. Reading his works made me familiar with communism and anti-imperilism and convinced me that communism is the way. Ofcourse Marx, Engles and Trotzky (who's not on the list btw) also made me understand things, but the first works I read were by Lenin.
Oh, and yes, he was the leader of the first communist revolution. That's important too ;)

I voted other. The Communist Manifesto first introduced me to the ideology, but it wasn't until I read Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paolo Friere that I started to claim socialism.

do you mean Paulo Freire? Yes, he was a great socialist. Like many leftists of Brazil, he sufferend from the tyrrany of the military dictatorship in the 60s to the 80s supported by the U$, damn imperialists
He, along with many others such as Luxemburg, Chomsky, and lenin expanded my socialism greatly.

I'd also add Chomsky to my list of people. I read "What Uncle Sam Really Wants" and it helped "radicalize" me. I also emailed him like 30 times, and we had some little debates through that. He's nice to even answer. 100+ emails/letters a day.

you are absolutely right...Malcolm X was an advocate of socialism

He never declared himself a Socialist, if I recall correctly. He identified with it, as reflected in Malcolm X speaks, but he never actually become a full fledged socialist like other black leaders, such as Dubois.

I did a report on Che for my Spanish class in High School, that's where I first learned about his interest in the the Spanish Civil War... which logically interested me. I learned more about Spanish Anarchism and thereby became an anarchist.
I think Rudolf Rocker should be on the list... but then again, ultimately my inspiration came from the workers of Spain more than any one individual.

But ,in a similar vein to Bianconero, the one person who most politicized me was Margaret Thatcher.

Hm...can't really say it was a day of inspiration. I grew up around it since I was a wee-lad, and my biggest inspirations are my family members. It's kinda hard to not feel some rage when its broken apart your family, you've seen the pain, and you've lived the struggle day in and day out. There was never any other choice, other ppl watched Fraggle Rock..I watched the Panama Deception lol

The reason i did not include many of the individuals you have suggested is that there is not space. Thinking back perhaps i shood have left out engels for Goldman or Luxemborg but i think it's important that Stalins in their even though he was a complete basturd because he is a big disgusion point within many posts on the board and im surprised at the no votes for Bakunnin.

Disillusionment with modern society led me to Communism a few years ago. If the pole was "your most respected revolutionary" I might have a satisfactory answer. I picked up on the theory through reading once I knew how much sense Communism makes. Reading Marx has given me a firm theoretical ground if that's a suitable answer.
