I've decided to start using internet radio again, but I'm frustrated by the fact that neither Windows Media Player nor Winamp seem to be working in that respect - when I click on an .asx stream to try and get something to play in WMP, nothing happens! When I try to play a .pls file in Winamp, I get a HTTP/1.1 500 Internal server error and the damn thing refuses to play.

Please help, because it's such a pointlessly annoying problem.

Normally you need to right click on the icon(winamp, real media player or wmp), and then click "save link as". Once you do that, just click whatever you saved, and the stream will start. Hope it helps.

P.S.
You can always use Screamer Radio (http://www.screamer-radio.com/download/). It takes just a couple seconds to install, has thousands of radio stations, sorted by genre and region, not to mention the fact that it is very fun to get high and listen to a Saudi Arabian radio station..
