I'm not sure renouncing mercedes benz or diamonds in conjuction with using the word "bougie" makes her a marxist, or even class-conscious. Anti-materialist, perhaps, but marxist? I am surprised to read this though, given that I've heard (unfortunately) her other songs....

I like Ke$ha, she makes good party music and sometimes thats all you want. Dont see a huge contradiction between that and a bit of political consciousness.
(though i have noticed more socialism creeping into popular mainstream music in the past few years. seeing rihanna and mao in the same video was the highlight of 2009 in my pathetic life)

I doubt Kehsa even knows the definition of "bougie" she probley didnt even write the song and if she did she probley used a thesaurus because she couldnt come up with a rhyme for Benz. On the slight chance that she knowns anything about socialism or communism she is probley just a poser like so many people now a days are because its "cool" to be on the frindge of society. She is just like every other celebrity out there they think its cool to belive in a cause i doubt she would give up her millions when or if the revoulution comes.

But seriously, if you want some imagery, how about P!nk's Raise Your Glass. In particular one of the themes in this video has P!nk dressed in red and challenging a banker to a sumo match.

I bet I've seen some usernames here in the past with the $ sign in them.
I really don't care much for Kesha or her music; I guess it's better than many Lady Gaga songs (except a few of her hits, which beats Kesha's music).

Rage Against the Machine. Public Enemy. The Coup.
Those bands are examples of socialism in music. A pop star putting Mao in one of her videos is not. By that logic, every person with a Che shirt is a Communist revolutionary.

"bougie" is a slang term amongst the black community which is synonymous with "rich, well off". It's also used against the small black middle class in the United States.
Futility Personified
22nd December 2010, 18:54
She uses psuedo-rebellious imagery like homages to punk styles and inverting the American flag, but that doesn't make her a rebel, just a lass with a clever producer/director or a good business brain of herself knowing how da yoof like to feel like rebels. Chucking in a term like bougie is just adding to that. Nothing erodes class consciousness like Kesha!

I hardly see how this makes her class concious. She's still raking in millions of dollars for her auto-tuned drivel. She's a (untalented) pop star, she's signed to a large record label and produces mass marketed "music" for Sony. Yeah, a real Marxist .

well the being a millionaire stuff may disqualify her from being a marxist, but why cant marxists be untalented, make pop music, use auto tune and create music for the proletarian masses?
