We live in a 21st century, just because muslims consider dogs unclean, this student's parents would probably rather get hit by a car than to have a guide dog.

It's not about what religion has come to it's about what religion refuses to come to....the 21st century. That is a pretty cool horse though.

Its bloody stupid. Its like not being able to eat certain types of meat, not because you dont like it....because you're not allowed to.

For fuck's sake, Muslim dietary laws don't affect you at all. Stop freaking out over other people's cultural differences.
And incidentally? The aversion to dogs is something from Arab culture, not Islam. Dogs are considered filthy animals akin to rats. There is one breed which is an exception to this; the salukhi. But this is an old cultural prohibition that goes back beyond Islam. Since ancient times, the only dogs that the largely nomadic Arabs would have encountered would have been filthy mongrels who picked over garbage heaps and ate their own crap. Salukhis however have been raised by desert nomads for centuries.
Before reacting so strongly and tarring a religious group of 1 billion people with your prejudices (and therefore shoring up the prejudices of liberal democratic society) try reading a little and learn a bit.

You call yourself left wing ?
You're god-damn right I call myself left-wing, and my refusal to flip out and react with ignorant prejudice against Muslims doesn't fucking change that.
Edit: Also dude, I just fucking noticed you're quoting an article from the Daily Mail and taking it without a single grain of salt. What the fuck, do you call YOURSELF left-wing? Is this the kind of skepticism the British Left uses against reactionary media? Should we expect you to post an article about the increase in knife crime and how immigrants are to blame?

hang on, I thought we didn't associate ourselves with religion. All im saying is, don't you think its stupid that in 21st century 'BRITAIN' muslim parents would rather her daughter suffer then have a guide dog to help her carry on in life.

Don't you think it's stupid to take a story written by the Daily Mail about Muslims at face value? Aren't you feeling a little embarrassed at uncritically joining in with a famously reactionary newspaper as it promotes xenophobia, cultural intolerance and fear of the Other?
Imperialist discourse, man.

Not gonna lie, that's pretty cool. I imagine it would be much less convenient than a dog though.
But yes, the Daily Mail is less reputable than Stormfront.

Their daughter is not suffering she has a horse. Let her be, okay she has chosen to have a horse, which may be better for her, and she has made the best of her situation. It is her choice to do this. And like Robocommie said her choice did not affect you.

Jewish and Islamic dietery laws actually made a lot of sense for the most part given the context in which they were devised. For example shellfishes are considered unclean- hot countries, no refrigeration and no anti-biotics- a bad plate of mussels could kill you.
The stupid thing, in my opinion, is insisting on this superfluous stuff that has nothing to do with being a good person or not in the 21st century. Kosher and halaal slaughtering methods are pretty damn cruel too.

Religion is like opium is it isaid. And like opium, one must be mindful of the horrors of addiction. Some will choose to avoid altogether for this reason, others will be casual. Some will still be addicted; and we can all point and laugh at them :thumbup1:

Marx said religion was the opiate of the people not because it is an addictive substance, but instead because it is a painkiller. So religion was the painkiller that helped people get through the horrors of capitalism on a day to day basis.

It's painkiller is what makes it addictive. One starts lying to one's seslf to justify the way things are. I didn't mean it was physically addicting. I meant it's ability to take control of one's mind.

Tsukae is right. Marx was using the term "opiate" as an anaesthetic however your analogy makes sense for an interpretation too. Remember however that Marx was very much talking about Abrahamic religion, Christianity for the most part in 19th century Europe at the time. I wonder what he would have made of Liberation Theology?

Umm...
I've seen a arab muslim household with dogs...

It's not like liberation theology is alien to marx...he must be aware of the history of many communal-type Christians from the past.
As a materialist, he himself probably saw religion as ultimately rubbish. As a social force, perhaps he has already covered or put out opinions on "liberation theology" type of religions sects.

1) It's a really pretty pony
2) Like Noinu said some people like Jehovah's witnesses go as far as not allowing their children to receive blood transfusions which obviously can cause death, not letting their daughter not have a dog is very different.
