To be honest, Risk over Internet sounds incredibly boring, and I don't really get how so many people are into it. The actual game is not that great but it can be really fun if you got some beer and plenty of people playing and shouting at each other.

I agree. I love me a good game of Risk, or Lord of the Rings Risk, but it needs to be in person with plenty of alcohol and food. My games also tend to run 6+ hours and it's tough to play that long online with such a poor setup.

I prefer Paradox's Europa Universalis, when it comes to computerised boardgames of such a genre. That whole series is pretty good, actually...many hours wasted playing Crusader Kings, I tell you.

...anybody else know what I'm talking about?

I have no idea what your talking about lol. But if its strategy, then I'd love to play it. I don't know anybody nearly as geeky or nerdy enough to play risk with me in person so I usually just stick to the online version haha. Sounds like it could be fun though.

Europa Universalis is a-ok, but the amount of hours I've spent playing Victoria: Revolutions is absolutely ridiculous. It's really an underrated little game and one of my favourite strategy games ever made, if not the. But yeah, Paradox Entertainment is pretty amazing anyways.

I love to play it with my other socialist friends after we have our meetings. LOTR Risk has to be my favourite of the different ones.

It's really a lot of fun. But once you start you'll have to kiss your free time good-bye. Takes far too long.

I mostly played EU: in nomine

You know the best way to spend hours and hours and hours, days even, in front of the computer? Using the save game conversion tools to get from the start of Crusader Kings right up to the end of Hearts of Iron. So difficult to decide whether or not that's more important than having a social life...going to university...wasting time eating food...

There was a persistent rumor in New York during the Sixties that Dave MacReynolds, head of the War Resistors League (and lately an SP-USA presidential candidate), was the best Risk player around.

Hah, yeah that's a blast. My game as Ming dynasty China was truly epic.

The only thing about Europa Universalis is the way that nations have a tendency of forming weird borders and acquiring odd territories, so that Poland-Lithuania will own half of Germany and some of France, while Sardinia-Piedmont is colonizing Africa. It's just a bit weird.

I've played one game of Risk, with some friends at a party once. I was awful at it.

I'll check out Dominate. Thanks for the link.

Off topic: Whenever I think of Risk, I always think of this.

Dominate seems complicated. I use this site which is vastly easier to get a hang of:

I know I remember winning one board-risk session with pure cunning.
"You step into my Balkan regions and I ally myself with the green dude!"
"Allright allright! Lets attack africa together!"
"Fine, but only if you invade latin america first."

Much harder via internet.

I use to play "Dominate!" a lot for years... the highest I ever got my score was 1906, low 1900's.

me and my friend developed an economic system for the game to make 1 on 1 more fun. it worked.

we also set up "technology levels" and a system of income, logistics and all that.

i guess thats what happens when you play risk a lot without alcohol.
