View Full Version : Anti-Poppy Campaigns?

Every year on Irish internet discussion forums there is always much discussion over the "Poppy" as sadly in recent years it has again begun to be sold on the streets of the 26 counties. In the past Republicans and Communists literally beat that blood stained symbol off our streets. Not so today sadly....Though their is much ranting there are no active campaigns against people selling this Imperialist symbol to collect for a well known kiddie fiddlers retirement fund.

Im curious to know if there is an active opposition to the Poppy in England, Scotland, Wales or Cornwall at the moment?

Thanks.

Where? I don't think its 'IRAC', part of the Q is obscured by a fold.

Also, WTF are 'Hoops'? Around where I live/used to live, 'Hoop' meant 'Arsehole'...

There was a tiny Muslim protest yesterday, about 30 Muslims protested against the wars and burnt a poppy.

This was reported by Daily Mail and almost every fucking facebook status update I saw was:

Today we saw Muslims break the 2 minute silence in Central London, holding banners with "British Soldiers Burn In Hell" & the burning of a poppy. If you don't like us British people paying respect for our bravefighters, then you know where the airport is. Disgusting, disrespectful...! Copy and paste this if you're BRIT...ISH and proud. R.I.P. our brave soldiers.

I defriended and blocked a close friend on my fashbook who joined a group called 'FUCK MUSLIM ****S YOU BURN OUR POPPYS AND WE'LL BURN YOU', or words to the effect.
This is the scale of nationalist indoctrination, when somebody as politically apathetic as the friend I got rid of can spin around and become a foaming mouth prick just because someone burned a pointless piece of fucking red plastic.

Quick Wiki search brings up Celtics nicknames

'Nickname(s) The Bhoys, The Hoops, The Celts'

I knew about 'Bhoys' and 'Celts' is obvious, but 'Hoops' is new to me.

Hoops is the vertical stripes on the shirts, they're hoops. The spelling mistake is "bloostained" or "blodstained", either way it's wrong.

It always annoys me when celtic fans making pro-Irish freedom chants are labeled sectarian.

Funny, I noticed that a few days ago when I first saw this image, but today it totally passed me by.

Way things are going, refusing to wear a poppy will probably be enough to get you done for treason before long round here

Nah, I jest lol. The whole poppy thing does seem to get bigger and bigger as each year goes by though, openly refusing to wear one will make you pretty unpopular, for sure

I'm shocked that they sell them in Ireland. Who does the money go to? surely not the Royal British legion?

No doubt because of the colonial adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There does seem to an increasingly ugly nationalist mood in the "UK" since I left it. The obvious manifestation is the EDL but I remember seeing a thread on libcom where members of the Anarchist Federation openly talked about how singing "No surrendur to the IRA" in the pub during football matches was a "laff". They are a pretty anti-Irish grouping historically but when I think about it that is really fucked up....I cant imagine French anarchists sings "No surrendur to the FLNC" in the bar.

All the more reason to oppose the blood stained Poppy.

The thing is that my experiance with civilian English, Scottish, Welsh and Cornish people has generally been good...But British soldiers are savage animals.

Stuff like this happened in Ireland also....I have talked to a couple of people who were "felt up" by the squaddies on there way to school at BA check points. Much worse happened in interrogation centres.

I don't wear a poppy, and nor does my politics teacher from Derry, no one questions it...and he openly states why he doesn't wear one.

It baffles me how different some places in Britain can be..

Yup....The 26 counties has a fucked post-colonial mentality. The ruling class is very pro-British and tries to shove a British agenda down our throats.

Well you wouldn't expect to see them in France or Iceland or Scandinavian countries. I wouldn't expect to see them in India or South Africa or Australia or any other ex colonial country. So I'm especially surprised to hear that they are on sale in a country that is still partly occupied by the very same soldiers that they are raising money for.

I doubt in those countries you can sent to prison for eight years officially (but in reality indefinitely) on the word of police that you might be a "terrorist".

Ireland both sides of the border is a very sick fucked up country.

I was referring to the Irish ruling class being pro-British.
